Driving refer 1 yr for small local co. Looking for better pay and retirement package, have @10 yrs to work before retirement, do not need medical benefits.
How could I maximize pay and how do I judge/determine what would be a "good" company to work for? This is second career and I have very little background knowledge of the trucking industry.

You are correct to look for good retirement package. Other than a union pension plan, which you are vested after 5 years, look for a good 401K plan. In 10 years putting in the maximum contribution, you will have a nice chunk of change. It's unlikely you will find a company with a company pension these days. If you do, the company probably won't last long. Your best pay will be with a tanker/hazmat company & second would be a reefer company. Not sure what is availabe in your area for tanker work, but hauling fuel pays well enough that you could probably contribute maximum to your 401K without it hurting.

I worked for one trucking company that pressured the drivers to allocate the larger amount of our contribution in company stock. I told them I did, but in actuality I had NO company stock, I had a very uneasy feeling about the company. They filed bankruptsy, liquidated,so I lost nothing, but some of the drivers lost everything & some lost a big portion of their retirement package. The larger portion of mine was in overseas Asian funds & performed well. The 401K was administered by an outside agency, so it was safe from being raided by the company.

Hope this helps, it's the best I can offer.

Thanks for the reply! What would you consider "good pay"? It looks like most companies pay per mile. Right now I'm paid hourly because I'm dropping small orders at 15-25 drops/day covering @ 400 miles and 12 - 15 hour days. Running semi Class A. How much more might/would running a tanker/hazmat pay? (I realize there will be a wide range, but I'd appreciate even an estimate as a place to start!)
    Thanks again.
