I don't believe in detention pay. Detention is a hassle to collect. Additional phone calls. Additional paperwork to be received with corrected rates. Some rate cons have little notes saying that detention is 35$ an hour after 2/3/5 hours, or something like that. Sometimes they want stamped and signed in and out times so on, so on. If there is a place that smells like detention, I bail out. I acquired a habit of asking who the shipper and receiver is. Sometimes after receiving the rate con, I go google and read reviews (if the place sucks - there should be some "nice" narratives found).
Big guys like CHR, Coyote, TQL, JB Hunt make it (I think on purpose) unnecessarily complicated to collect it and even if you do, it is peanuts when compared to a lost opportunity to reload.
Finally got my own truck

I seldom need detention pay just for that reason. I've gotten somewhat smart about knowing what kind of loads will be long load or unload times. Sometimes based on product, sometimes based on destination city. I use Google reviews as well. This particular load I didn't check out before I got it. I would have taken it anyways. I just deadheaded back to Fargo and I still averaged $2/loaded mile for it.
Sure I lost a day but I'll have a better chance to make up for it from here rather than any of the small handful of cheap 46,000lb loads that were sitting out in Montana.
I have never deadheaded this far, nor have I been so quick or comfortable making a decision to DH. Probably because I was in such a dead hole that I didn't have much of a choice, and partly because I got enough on the load to make it okay. The detention time would have paid for the fuel I burned today. Minor annoyance. But I've learned that when I make a decision, I tend to stick with it and accept it better. No use crying over spilled milk. I just make a choice and move on and don't really fret over it.
It was over 100 degrees F in one spot in eastern Montana over by Glendive. Probably better that I didn't pull a heavy load out of there.
The broker on this load told me that I didn't check in with them 2 hours before detention time started. But on the rate con it did not mention anything about detention time other than to make sure it's documented. But I did call and notify them when I arrived, and industry standard is 2 hours after arrival of appointment time. So my original arrival call was the 2 hours before detention time started. I should have received 3.5 hours of detention. $175 industry standard. Exactly what I spent in fuel today. I also have macropoint and they used that as well. Whatever. I really wish one of these days one of these bassturds who disrespect my work and my time really get into a bind and need my truck. I don't like to be vindictive, as I'm not that kind of person, but it's business. It's not personal, it's business. You do this to me, I have to make it up in charging an unreasonable rate. That's not revenge, that's hedging against future kicks in the nuts.
I thanked the broker for the business and that this would be the last time we worked together.
Carrier named Bennet. Ironically enough, later they called on my posted truck in Fargo to offer me a load somewhere. From another one of their offices. Wasn't interested.
Let's see if I can make a week out of this. Gonna be fun. Fargo can be great and the next day it can be dreadful. Just no way of knowing from one day to the next. Hit or miss here. Hoping tomorrow is a hit. -
So I'm at this shipper. Only truck here. They get me loaded quickly, never tell me about it, so after an hour I go back and check, I'm loaded up. I go inside and the guy is sitting in his office.
"I'm at lunch right now. I got you loaded but I'm at lunch right now. Once lunch is over, I'll get to your paperwork."
Lol. Whatever. 45 minutes is nothing to these people, but to us, 45 minutes might as well be 5 hours of wasted time sometimes.
They don't get it. Maybe come December, they will.Farmerbob1, DUNE-T, Oscar the KW and 1 other person Thank this. -
