Headed Dallas to Chico, Ca. Taking I20 to I10 and up I5. How bad is getting from 10 to 5? I was looking at breaking off around San Bernardino up to Barstow and over to Bakersfield then I5. Is it worth the trouble?

from dallas take 287 to Amarillo then 40 into barstow if you take 58 to Bakersfield after 10pm the west bound scale in mojave will be closed take 99 north and only scale you will get is in chowchilla, if you wanted you can go around it by taking 152 west then 59 back north to merced on 99

Just drive slow, you'll be fine...oh wait, backups in LA, you'll be driving slow anyway. Just follow the texting 4 wheeler in front of you

Chico isn’t anywhere near Los Angeles... why would you be driving in LA?

Us95 to Needles, i40 to Barstow, get on US58 and run that to Us99 in Bakersfield. Run that north to Chico.

I don’t like 99, at all, but it’s faster than hopping across the valley to I5 as long as there isn’t an accident.

After more thought I think I’ll take this route if the weather is looking good.

Well I don’t know that. I figured the interstate would be quicker than stopping for towns along the way. I asked the question for suggestions because all I have to go on is google maps and I know LA traffic has a bad reputation.

40 is the United State's Main Winter Road to keep the freight flowing to Chico via State 99 LA has nothing to with this trip

I would not take 99 from Blythe to Needles its a 2 lane narrow in places on good spots to pull off lot of soft sandy shoulders. From here 10 is a better choice.

If your coming in on 10, take the 10 to the 57 north short jump up to the 210 west, stay on the 210 all the way to the 5. That is the shortest mileage, be aware that as you go thru Pasadena the 210/134 interchange, stay on the 210, but the 210 will take off from the right 2 lanes and the 134 will continue west.If you manage to get stuck on the 134 no real big deal, just take it to the 5 north.

Take the 5 North (in Castaic there is a Pilot) over the mountain (Top of the Grapevine is a Flying J) and you will drop down into central valley, just past the truckstops (Wheeler Ridge Petro on the west T/A on the east), 5 & 99 will split,(On 99 just north of Bakersfield is a Flying J) stay on 99 it will take you to Chico.

This is my stomping grounds, So as a Local Cal Driver this how I would go.

The bad reputation is well deserved.

The up coming expected weather south would be a better bet this time, Although I do like running 40 as well. Mileage differences between them isn't far off
