If company starts you out at .37c per mile and you drive average 60mph you're only making $22/hour. That's ok but then some days you'll only drive 3-4 hrs so you'll make $90 a day roughly. You'll be on duty for 5-6hrs but not getting paid for it. We should be getting paid for every minute we're in that truck or performing truck related tasks/on duty time

If you're not familiar with Tx HOS and how they work, then y'all should check them out. It works much better and doesnt force drivers to chase the clock as much.
On the fed clock, the fact that the timer doesnt stop once its started is stupid.TokyoJoe and stuckinthemud Thank this. -
How about a lower rate but pay us for every hour we're in the truck. If we're in the truck 5 days/24hrs a day, pay a driver between $8-12/hr for 24hrs. Or make a dual rate, 11/14hr clock pay them $12-20 an hour while on duty and like $8-10hr while off duty.TokyoJoe, CorsairFanboy and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.

Yup, I want paid while I play my computer game, I might even turn it off and drive once in a while at times too, if I think a bonus is in the cards. lol
The job is not just riding and guiding, it is trucking and a certain amount of down time is just part of the job.
I ran a shop for several years, mechanics were paid percentage, some had the same attitude, that they were only being paid while they were turning wrenches, well that is not the way it works either, and it spells it out right in the flat rate books, that cleanup is figured right in the flat rate time.
I have an idea the industry is headed to hourly pay eventually, hence all the drivers cameras, eld's and so on, so the companies can be looking straight at you.
Hope you guys like it when the time comes, my time is short, so I will not be dealing with it. -
A lot of industries including trucking have per diem pay. Now truckin co's have figured out how to screw a driver and make it part of their cpm pay. I believe the max tax deductible amount is $66/day for us. A friend of mine works in the oilfield and is $22/hr plus $110/day per diem every day he's out on the job away from home. He works 12-15hr days.
We live in our trucks and arent really compensated for it. Drivers have allowed themselves to be screwed over for decades.
If I run a short haul load, I spend more hours off duty, but Im still stuck in my truck and sometimes in locations with zero amenities including a bathroom. Or we're stuck at a truck stop with terrible food options. But we willingly do it every day.stuckinthemud Thanks this. -
Yes I can understand that you think there would be company employees who would abuse hourly pay, there would certainly be a lot of drivers who would be tempted.
-
Correction, there are a lot of drivers that abuse hourly pay now.
-
And eld's are in most co trucks they know the location so if a driver is sitting in a truck stop or somewhere else when he should be rolling, his/her dispatch can easily find out why. Plus who would rather make a lower per hr rate than the higher one?stuckinthemud Thanks this.

And there are a lot of non trucking people that abuse hourly pay.
And there are a lot of people that get fired for it everyday. It's not the 1970's anymore. It's very easy for a company to tell which employees are milking the clock and which are not.jbird05031126, Gearjammin' Penguin and stuckinthemud Thank this. -
If it is a FCFS place notorious for long wait. And IF they keep track of your time for detention a lot won't "sign" you in till its your turn.
