Google Maps.
I've mentored a couple drivers in the US that have used the $400 trucker units along beside me, and Google Maps was giving better directions in Wisconsin and Illinois. One driver had the routing sending him down a no-truck route in Chicago.
The best combo I've found is using Google to guide you down a route (by using multiple "stop" pins) that you plan with the full map and a trucker atlas. Once you get to the next pin, you just have to tap "continue" to move onto the next one.
Garmin or Rand Mcnally ?

I have the garmin Dezel and live in pa. It isn’t worth a #### in regular roads. It does know any weight restricted roads or brideges. Does know height restrictions either. It knows some weight restricted roads but puts you up to a half hour away rerouting you when there are much shorter routes that aren’t restricted. What a pos. I just use google maps on my phone and if I see a restriction, I keep going and let the thing recalculate. Those trucker gps’s maybe be good for major highways and roads but once you hit town, you are screwed. Junk
swervyjoe and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
Copilot actually does really well.
Only streets I've been routed on for no trucks. Were in Cali. And my destination was on those streets. -
I have had several different GPS's and I have figured out one thing. They all only lasted about a year if that long. They all have sent me down roads a truck has no business being on. They all started freezing or throwing up error codes within about 6 months. Every RM I have had all ended up with the same issue. The charging cable connection on the unit wares out on the circuit board and wont charge the unit so you have to always have it plugged in. This usually started errors shortly after and I would end up throwing away the GPS. So with that said I would just compare prices and just get the most affordable one to use for routing only. Get Trucker Path Pro app for you phone so you can have access to truck stop lists. Use google maps to look at your stops on satellite view and see if there is a better route.

You should have stuck with what you're familiar with.
IMO both are about equal in terms of doing the core function of navigation. They aren't perfect. Both rely on a constantly changing database of truck routes/restrictions that is never 100% complete. Local routing will never be that great on any of these.
I'm a long time Garmin user, and favor them. In use now is a 760DEZL that will remain until it quits working. It's just easier for me to use. I got a RM 8" tablet and really tried to like it. But, the display is too busy with stuff I don't care about, and the menu system is too complex to be really useful. The RM also depends too much on the tablet's wifi/internet data stream, which isn't all that reliable at times. Although that could be a tablet issue and not the same with their regular nav units.Boardhauler and tommymonza Thank this. -
That is a big 10-4. They suck when going off the big road. Google is your friend in that case as you stated.
