My Dēzl 770 just started giving me local street names instead of highway numbers when I updated the map over the weekend. Instead of telling me to turn right onto US25, it says turn right onto Veterans Parkway. And when I look through my turns coming up to see which way it is routing me, there are no route numbers, only local road names like Main Street or Northridge Drive. I called Garmin support and they said that is the new routing feature they are using and there is no way to disable it. So this Garmin unit just became useless. Don't update your maps if you're not okay with that.

I've been using it alongside Copilot and Copilot is doing a better job on routing and handling restricted roads. It's not perfect, but so far better than the Dēzl 770 and now I'll be using it full time. I might but a RM Overdryve to see how it compares.

Garmins have always told you to turn onto the "street name", but has gotten better recently it seems about referring to road numbers instead but only in a handful of situations. With the newer database format, you have to be zoomed just right to see highway numbers. Used to, it was hard to see any highway numbers, no matter what you did. But I still like the Garmin, for all its' quirks.

So, what you're saying is, my 770 that hasn't been given the latest update just became worth retail price for a new one? :) JK. Thanks for the heads up, I guess I won't be updating mine anymore.

Seriously, though, a whole bunch of us ought to start flooding support with complaints and asking that future updates can toggle between road numbers and road names (E911 names ON/OFF).

I'm on the Garmin train. Never had any issues with it, but also never used anything else. What I like about my Garmin, I forgot which one it is, is that if I have multiple stops and I often do, I can punch them in at once along with fuel stops and let that be that.

It gives me alerts for slow downs, traffic, speed limits, and once upon a time it gave me a 100 mile warning that one of the roads in my route had been closed.

You need to always “check” with google maps before relying on the Navteq data Garmin uses. My garmin yesterday tried to route me 110 miles OOR to go around a closure 90 miles up the road that did not exist. Navteq is good about getting stuff put in but bad about taking it out when it needs to come out.

And they will often times interpret a construction lane closure as a complete road closure.

Google Maps and INRIX is a far superior product. And Google’s current live traffic flow status will never lie to you.

The only problem with Google is that it doesn't route trucks/CMVs

That’s fine. You don’t use it for routining. You just use it as a backup and verification and traffic monitoring tool

Why in the hell would any company choose to use street names for numbered state or federal roads. That's idiocy.

And here I was thinking about trying a Dezl. No more. Not if that bug isn't fixed.

Because they sit in a cubicle. They aren't the ones out here trying to navigate congested rush hour on the beltway.
