I can fully endorse directions from @Ruthless - got my head straight for a Queens adventure in a big truck. Ranked right up there with carnival rides people dare you to get on, that will surely kill you. Then afterwards you realize how stupid it was to be that way.
FYI - there is a NYDOT GIS system where you can find the actual over/under clearance for any bridge in the state. Be on high speed internet when you use it. It's basically an interactive map of everything, and slings lots and lots of data every time you do anything. Zoom in, click on the bridge, and the pop up gives you the details. My original bookmarked link is broken (of course). This page gets you to the top level linking to all the NYDOT GIS systems, then drill down to see what you need to: GIS Applications
I don't as a rule do NYC, but the whole upstate is littered with low clearance RR overpasses. These GIS maps clear that up.

NY City bylaw prohibits 53 feet trailers access to deliver in the 5 NY City burbs.

You can get a permit. Nobody ever does. I heard it on good authority that never gets enforced unless you're also doing something else that brings the police and/or tow trucks, such as hitting something, gridlocking an intersection, or a bridge strike.

6 AM appointment in Queens with a 53 feet reefer.
I called ahead my receiver and let them know that I'm on time and I need their dock.
Arrived there, the dock was occupied with another truck unloading.
For 30 minutes I blocked a city street lane.
Couple people called the police.
By the time they showed up, I was at the dock.
I was informed about the NYC bylaw regarding the 53 feet trailers.
Fines were ranging from $90-$500 back then.
On Jan 2007. I talked my way of the fine and never went back.

Totally understand. I got lucky with mine. 53 reefer, double parked in the street for about 20 min until I got a door, then A-game backing around more parked cars into an unlit indoor dock with clutter everywhere. Only had to move while parked about 10 ft one time to let someone out. No cops called and no parked cars or clutter was injured. By the time I left there were two more 53's double parked waiting where I had been. Clean getaway.
Honestly I wouldn't have done that one if it weren't from greed. It was a multi stop that ran over New Years with a stop in MD, then Queens, then 2 more up around Albany. And an ice storm was forecasted but fortunately didn't create impossible conditions. Can't recall if it was an all-time high rate for me, or just a runner up. I'll go about anywhere that's not off-road or sprinkled with metal shards and broken glass, but it's gonna cost ya LOL.Siinman and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
Especially around Rochester. One of my pickups is downtown and there's only 1 way in. The street it's on is surrounded by tracks on all 3 sides. Where you turn on to the street it's on it looks like it'll take you under 11ft bridge but you turn right 10ft before the bridge.
