There is no decision when it comes to running illegal. They can't force you either without facing penalties. They can hire someone legal or contract the load. The penalty for driving out of state without a proper CDL/medical card can get you a 60 day suspension and a $5000 fine. Is it worth it?
I'm assuming you are running under the farmers exemption. The only way you can cross state lines is if your state has a reciprocating agreement with the next state and you don't exceed the 150 mile rule. Going to MN is out of the question.
Going out of state underage.

If you're gonna do it, do it all the way and take a female not married to you across the state line for immoral purposes so they can get you on Mann Act as well lol.
PS the Mann Act is defined in good detail in the movie CONVOY which is required viewing for all 'real' truckers.not4hire Thanks this. -
Melissa: Well I think I've had just about enough of this, thank you very much. I'll think I'll take my things and GET OUT. If you'll pull over to the side, I'm sure I can hitch a ride very easily... Weren't you listening to me? I said I'm ready to get
out!
Rubber Duck: You want out? We're being chased. You want out? Jump.
Melissa: You want to add the Mann Act to your collection?
Rubber Duck: Mann Act's for 18 year olds, not someone who's seen the better side of thirty!LaBubba, scottied67, truckon and 1 other person Thank this. -
The outlaw farm kid in me says go for it-)hell I did way more than that when I was way younger than u! But that was in another century--lol
Remember u r talking Minnie ha ha here and it does seem lately they have lost there sence if humor--besides no one has mentioned other ramifications--like Iowa disqualifyin ur in state privileges due to this--shame everyone is so serious and it ain't no fun anymore-)but that's truckin in the 21st century--some call it progress

Haha ya it's funny to listen to the old guy talk about pickin up cattle from montanna with his uncle when he was 14 and drivin when he wanted a nap. Or getting a visit from the sherrif for havin his kid feed cattle. The sheriff didn't think a 5 year old should be drivin down the highway on a tractor to get to the next lot.

Hold on, As a farmer... If you use farm plates you should not have a problem in Minnesota as there is reciprocity for farmers between Iowa and Minnesota... North Dakota is the problem. Here is what I would do. Call the Dot in each state and ask about the Agricultural exemptions... and no Farmers don't need medical cards either... Heck, they don't even NEED CDL's. You have one which is a plus.... My guess is that this may be quite possible for you. Interestingly, Scalemaster doesn't seem to be aware of the Ag exemptions. I'd call and ask.

He has a licence, common sense says, he should be good to go,but NO, nothing can ever be simple, they got to make it very confusing and difficult
-
Oh, I am aware of Ag exemptions. There are just not as many of them as you think.
Medical card? You bet farmers need it. No Ag exemption for 18 wheelers there.
CDL? Exempt only within 150 miles of the farm.
Other than some price breaks on license plate fees, there are no other AG exemptions outside 150 mile radius Interstate operation. -
I failed a USDOT audit due to crossing state lines on farm tags. I got two tickets at a scale that happened to be open, no medical card and no DOT#, he didn't say anything about drug consortium at the time, but nine months later that was what failed me on the audit. USDOT told me that despite any reciprocity agreements between states, when you cross the state line, you're in interstate commerce and subject to USDOT regs. From what I learned in the audit, You have to have medical card, DOT #, and drug consortium, among various other things like driver file (even if you're the only driver) and maintenance records for equipment. I was within the miles so didn't need a CDL, I did have a current logbook.
Once I went commercial, (a small step from running farm tags if you cross state lines) I hauled for a guy that had his own farm tagged truck. I did most of his interstate hauling but he did send his farm tagged semi out of state on occasion. He got snagged by USDOT because his hired man/driver bought a fuel permit out of state and somehow this was picked up by USDOT.
I was contacted by USDOT that they would schedule an onsite audit and I blew them off thinking there was no way USDOT would come to middle of nowhere SD to mess with one guy, driving one truck, hauling his own stuff. Turns out there is no limit to the USDOT budget and they sent an ESL woman named Maria all the way from San Diego to South Dakota to audit me. Being out of state without drug consortium is an automatic fail, apparently. Just my personal experience.Last edited: Apr 14, 2013

Sorry to hear that, the Fed DOT would certainly have open season down in Southern Mn, as I know for a fact, many Iowa farmers drive up here to sell corn... With farm plates, and it happens daily. I happen to see it, at ethanol plants quite a bit. Opps, now the cat is out of the box!
