Yeah, but I only pay $50 a month for my health care. Considering everthing else that is covered, I am sure Reddaway (YRC) picks up some of it. I just found out that they don't pay us the extra 2 hours of holiday dispatch pay anymore if they send you out on a holiday. Can't wait for things to pick up again.

I read your post before I left for work this morning. You gave a fair argument and quite a bit for me to think of. I definitively see both sides of the coin. My position is this: I work out of a terminal with less than 15 people. We are far isolated from corporate politics and we do not come into this "cost-cutting" scrutiny that the rest of this (or any other industry) is vulnerable to. While my benefits are not superb, I get paid enough to come to work happy, leave work happy, and have enough to pay my bills and set some money aside. All my coworkers are great, and the guy that supervises all of us takes good care of us to make sure we have a positive work environment.

On the flip side of the coin, I also worked at a larger company that was staffed with over 600 people, and cost cutting was enforced at all levels. Even if it was at the expense of their prized workers that made everything happen. So yeah, I would have loved go be part of a group that protected my interest and kept my job environment safe, fair, and non-hostile.

One thing I would see as an outsider is that unions tend to take control away from the private owner of a company. Seeing how most companies are publicly traded, I guess I don't feel so bad. It is where you are based out of. Like I said, I am lucky to have my job.

    Good insight though.

I guess the Reddaway terminals are different everywhere. I wasn't paying a dime for my health benefits for my whole family, which is something they did at Yellow when I worked there. I just figured it was the same at all Reddaway yards. However, some Reddaway yards are union, mine isn't though. Actually now that I think about it, 50 bucks a month is about what I was paying in union dues at Yellow. Think it was 54 to be exact. Still 50 a month for health benefits is good.

Our trucks are supposed to be governed at 63. But for some reason there is one that does 75 on the pedal. Nobody takes it because they all have their assigned trucks which are in better condition. So I take the fast piece of crap regularly. What a difference, it shaves off a good half hour on my Cleveland run, half hour I can be paid at $20. That's $10 a day, $200 a month extra, right there, just because of that.

All of our trucks are antiquated.. we don't have nice trucks. Just nicer pieces of crap. The downside is that they all run like crap and at the same slow speed. 15mph up hill pushing a rocky set?!?! I will sacrifice my heater and radio just to have a truck that can go 70 mph to keep up with the flow of traffic. If I were in your position, I also would take the truck that does 75. You made a good choice.

This thread was doing pretty good before the teamsters got here. Just like most of the union carriers.

So you're paid by the mile I take it then? Otherwise what's the point of driving a 75mph truck and clocking out a half hour earlier?

I am with UPS Freight(union) and many drivers are unhappy with the union as am I. We had a driver who failed a random drug test and the union got his job back and we also have contract carriers hauling our freight and the union doesn't care. Anytime you call them with an issue they seem annoyed you are calling. Unions suck.
