Yea you can do that.

 

Sleeping in the Costco lot and I get a knock at the door with an unhappy guy telling me to go to dock 1 and they'll get me unloaded.
OK, until I realize I am out of hours and it is 0130. I though he was one of the crew that came in at 0400, but it seems he was called in on a special shift.
Well, sorry, but I am out of hours and can't move the truck.
He was then even less happy.

It was agreed that if I could not be unloaded before my 14 ran out that I would wait for the morning shift to work me in.
Calling someone in, in the middle of the night, does not seem reasonable, especially without consulting me about it.

 

SERIOUSLY!

You can move the truck a short distance as long as you don't exceed 5 MPH and never have a problem.

 

Yup, seriously.
I'm not moving without being on-duty.
That is the only LEGAL way to be working.

And I do have a problem with getting 2 hours of sleep and then moving to a dock to be unloaded and then moving back out and trying to find parking again and maybe getting a little more sleep.

I do NOT do that!


This whole way of thinking that I, as a driver, have to respond to and accept the consequences of others' mistakes is absurd.
My time (especially my sleep time) is not at the whim of others.

 

Yes, but once I went on duty at 0130 I would have had to start my 10 hour break again after I finished that live unload.
If I had done that it would have been late afternoon when I could have started again.

By waiting I ended up in a dock and taking a 12 mile pallet load at around 0800.
By 0930 I was on my way to my next load.

Which was the better option?

The point is not to work to absolute capacity at all times, because that is not in our best interest.
The point is to work smarter.

But I went on duty a while later to do the post trip, in case your wondering why I didn't have a 10 in at 0130.

 

When we first went to ELDs, I pushed the limits of what to log and earned myself a one on one logging session with safety.

One of things that came out of that was I had to log 15 minutes for either pre trip or post trip, but not both. The other could simply be noted in the comments when making a duty change .... ie drive to off duty or the way I do it off duty to sleeper no need to go on duty for post trip.

Did it that way my entire time on ELDs while at Swift and since. No beefs from safety at Swift or my current company, as well as no issues during DOT inspections.

But that was then ... policies change. Some of those changes were why I left Swift after Knight took over.

 

I do 15 minute pretrips.
at end of day I log on duty. as soon as I done with doing Mac 32 I log off.
haven't heard anything from swift yet.
