About junk left behind in trailers. I was at a Walmart DC in Indiana very recently and when I grabbed the empty they assigned it was full of various packing remnants of the last load. I pushed the bigger stiff onto the gravel behind the trailer and swept the rest out. Some of it was large pieces of cardboard. What the hell am j going to do with that? I'm sure they have receptacles inside the warehouse ir could have been disposed in at the time of unloading. I've had 4x8 pieces of plywood left in ttrailers after making a store delivery at a Menards. Again, what am I going to do with that? I left them against the wall by the dock and went on my way.

Only things I never just sweep out are anything that could puncture another driver's tire. Metal, glass etc..

 

It is always the drivers problem, or the drivers fault as far as anyone is concerned.

But as far as I'm concerned, trash in the trailer after delivery is the receivers problem. It was part of the load that should have been unloaded.

They can deal with it first hand or second hand, either on the dock or in the yard.

I am required by many shippers to bring in a clean trailer - freshly swept out.
If it goes in that way I should expect the return when I leave the receiver. Shouldn't I?

However, I am not usually so hard nosed about it.
If it is some light trash that I can contain in a Walmart bag I will just sweep it up and put it in a bag, disposing it in a container when I can.
I really don't like to dump anything out of the back of the trailer if I can help it.

But when they leave a 3 foot section of a pallet and several smaller segments, along with a bunch of other stuff...

Couldn't agree more. Shippers and receivers are essentially renting the space inside of a trailer. You rent anything in life and return it a mess, guaranteed they slap on a huge fee. Truckers deal with way too much crap

 

The whole thing is a catch 22. As much as I would love to dump that crap on the consignee's site, if they get pissy about it, you're the one that gets in trouble.

So discretion being the better part of valor, I just go to the nearest t/s, back up as close to a trashcan as I can and dump it there.

 

Just pull out from the dock about 2-3 feet. No one will see

 

I've been lucky so far. The only trailers I've swept out are "new" ones I've picked up from the yard. It's annoying having to re-stow the load-locks after a drop just to get 'em back out though.
