I'm living proof, the biggest thing is to make sure the baffle is properly mounted in the radiator tank. Even with Premco pump/injectors @ 10% over, 195° is as hot as it gets and it did that prior to fuel system mods as well.

Can you post a pic of the thermostat housing on your current engine? Just to give us an idea of what you have.

I wouldn't deal with the shop that told you that. That is not necessary and it's just a wasted expense. That sounds like a Pittsburgh Power kind of thing.

If I was going to spend $20,000 on an engine, I would just call Cummins and get a Recon engine. I can't imagine it could be a hell of a lot more than that.

There used to be a place I think in Raleigh North Carolina that had long block big cams for $11,000.

@OLDSKOOLERnWV do you remember that place?

He's got a regular flow big cam 300 in an '80s cabover. Can't remember if it's one two or three.

I hesitate to get an engine with an ECM because that's when the problems started. They really got bad with DEF.

but I have thought about getting an N14

@zmster2033 had my old truck with tons of paperwork, recently rolled over and trashed, that we discussed parting out - it might be too late, but there was an option. Maybe he'll chime in and see if it's still available. It had a fresh rebuild. 2001 KW T2000 - N-14 with 13speed.

Would be a good upgrade indeed.

I’m looking at a early mechanical N14, Cummins is talking of quitting their support for the 855 Big Cam, eventually no OE parts will be available just aftermarket…

Aftermarket isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Cummins reman QC has been in the crapper for sometime now.

Not saying aftermarket is a bad thing, I have aftermarket parts in my engine now. But eventually OE is going to be obsolete sooner than later. The N14 will be supported for some time but not sure how long the way everything is changing….

    Cummins isn't Cummins anymore.

I don't know that aftermarket is any better or worse. Everything now is made somewhere else and who the hell knows what's what because it sure as hell it's not being made here.

I bought genuine Ingersoll Rand Parts for my air compressor. Genuine 100%... from India.

Nowadays the manufacturer doesn't mean anything. You just have to decide if it's better to buy something from Singapore or Thailand or Taiwan or wherever the hell they make it.

Some of it is better, some of it is worse, and some of it is probably inconsistent.

Back in the day everything was made to last and when you bought Parts you bought genuine parts that were genuinely perfectly the right thing.

Now it's just a crapshoot of crap.
