I prefer the Rand but my old Trainer who has been trucking for 20 years prefers Garmin

you should get a Trucker specific GPS company. To make sure that they have the options that truckers specifically need otherwise you will get screwed when it actually matters. I use trackyourtruck.com

The Rand McNally TND 730, is by far one of the better GPS systems on the market today.
It gives you posted speed vs actual speed.
Has dual routing capabilities so you can compare routes in distance and time.
If you route has tolls, it will also give the cost as listed by the state where the toll occurs.
It has fuel tracker, maintenance tracker and trip tracker.
Has 3 options for choosing how you view your screen.
It also let's you choose how you view your route.
Has an adress book so you can store frequently visited addresses.
Has full POI to include all truck stops, shopping, entertainment etc..
It is Elog compatible if you add the E100 black box.
Comes complete ready to use out of the box.
    Includes Lifetime map updates.
And if you download the Rand McNally Dock on your PC, you can back up all data, do your map updates, run diagnostics on your GPS.
One new feature added to the new TND 730 is a feature called Tell Rand.
This allows you to send information directly to the programmers and tech support from your GPS.
Any corrections you send in say speed changes, route changes, etc., get included in the next update.
By far a very good investment.
It is also one of the only brand of GPS, that not only rely on information from the National Transportation Data Base, but from its actual users as well.

Garmin is ok. I have 2. One trucker GPS that I now use in my POV, and one that I use on the boat, which for Marine Navigation is almost second to none.
But the Garmin does not even come close to the available features of the next generation Rand McNally for trucking.

Rand McNally customer service is really good. When you call in they are very diligent in finding you the right answer.
If the tech you are talking to can't find the answer while your on the phone, and it's something that requires a bit more research, they are very good about returning phone calls.
You're right, the Garmin does have a lot of similar features, but there is so much more to the Rand McNally.

I have a RM 560 does the ELD also I'll use it in a pinch(rarely- ok twice in 4 months) Google maps on my nice big 8" tablet which is 5x faster than the RM and along with that I use Trucker Path no real reason to ever go over on driving time with this app. It allows you to see most places a truck can park and the availability of space at your chosen parking spot. All these ARE FALLABLE you have to THINK about averything you do in a truck and even then you will more than likely take a few lumps but they should be less severe.

I usually research where I am going ahead of time. I love using the Google GPS on my tablet when I get close. Please note that I already know where I need to go......but the Google map can be put on Satalite view so you can see all the landmarks also!!!!!!!
