Dustin Brock has got it right. If you are going to use one. USE ONE. Don't go half way. Besides some of the automobile drivers grant a lot of respect very quickly.

Deer? It varies, from the scrawny little hoofed rats in the southwest (maybe 100 lbs?) to the corn fed monsters in Iowa that can be 3x that much.

I hit a deer in Wyoming last October. Doe left the impression of her head in the grill, plastic Freightliner bumper cracked, and bent the valve stem on the steer tire. Five hours waiting to get road service. $1000 deductible for the owner. One week downtime in the shop. Had to get a new hood because the old hood had a crack. I think the shop bill was around $10K. That doe weighed about 130-150 lbs, I know because I dragged her carcass off the road.

Most folks I talk to that have installed a Hamburger Helper on their grill did so after going through something like that. It's definitely on my "need it soon" list for my truck.

Talked to my insurance guy a few weeks ago. He said that a third of all cars totalled in Oklahoma are totalled because of deer strikes. He didn't have the figures on big trucks, as they aren't totalled. But more than a few truckers have wrecked after hitting a deer or trying to yank the wheel to avoid one. At 70 mph the impact can destroy steering if the deer is large enough and takes out linkages or bends a metal bumper into the steer tire.

Schneider has even installed some hamburger helper on their crapcadias in some areas. That crapcadia radiator is plastic and rides about 10" above the road. Striking a house cat can disable a crapcadia.
