If you are not averaging $1k day gross, you need to reevaluate your model.

Grossing 5K a week as an OO should be easy these days (post hurricanes). I am in NJ, I haul Dry Van, and generally run NJ-TX and a round trip to Laredo even before the hurricanes, easily achieved that even at $1.75/mile. I try to find loads that pay at least $2/mile. I don't do short runs and try to gross $1200/day. Sometimes I have to sit a day or two after delivery, in order to pick a good paying load, or even to deadhead to a good paying area.

Stay out of FL, CO, AZ. I try to stay east of I-35 and if I go to places like Williston, ND, I deadhead East or South East without wasting too much time searching for a back-haul. I am currently doing dedicated work in PA, MA, NY, NJ, NH, ME, CT and gross 9K a week 5 days, home weekends.

I don't haul anything that pays less than $1.75. I'd rather deadhead.

Who are you leased to? OH, GA, TN, NC, SC, PA, AL, MS all pay well. IMHO.

I just want to make sure it's understood that in business consistency can equal longevity. Spot market freight means you are at the mercy of many things to which you cannot control. Don't forget history, it wasn't long ago companies who ran spot market only went out of business because they banked on the market not shifting. It's always moving, right now it's good. It won't be forever, you have to be ahead of whats coming.

Dive in and make it happen driver. No-one can tell you how. Whether or not you can is entirely dependent on your own skills at it. Can you sniff out the good lanes? Can you get rates to a dead hole like Florida that make it a winner? Can you make snap seat of the pants calls that will win? Can you do $5,000 a week and net something half way decent from it? Not everyone booking $5,000 in a week is pulling in a net that makes it worth the trouble. It's very do-able. Even in a down market. No-one can tell you how or even if you can. You have to get hands on and learn how it's done.

Easy. Go to work and make money...5k a week or a G a day is easy to do. If you can’t do it at the company your leased to find a new company, try a new load board, knock on doors get new & better direct customers.

Put yourself out there and figure it out

Badmon, 1johnb and csmith1281 Thank this.

OK, here's a little background information on my situation so you know exactly what I'm asking. I just leased a truck with Prime. I haven't finished my first week yet, but I'm hearing average weekly gross is 3K to 4K. If it's possible to gross 5k or more as an owner operator, why is that not the norm at Prime? It kind of sounds to me like in order to gross 5K plus, you have to be running with your own authority off the load board or have your own customers. So since I'm leased onto a mega, they are basically just another middleman for me?

You have to WORK for it! Most people don't like to do that.
