One thing to keep in mind, this is extremely fluid. What is a hot market today may be dead next month. Flexibility is the key to success and longevity.

Here is the problem.. no matter what you need 2 years experience to get decent rates on insurance or to even move to a owner op company..

People claiming leasing is bad but already having years experience is a whole different point of view vs a new guy coming in who has to get those years of experience in before he can move on to a more profitable business model.

What will I get at Landstar that I'm not getting at Prime? I called them once and I think they said they pay 70% of linehaul. Prime pays 71% to 72% depending on which division you are in. I get fuel discounts here as well. Just to compare apples to apples, if I took the truck I leased through Prime over to Landstar, would I be making more money? The way I see it… I'm not going to get into truck ownership anytime soon because nobody will finance me with my credit and experience. So the only way for me to make more money is to find a place I can gross more.

It's too early to tell yet. Tomorrow is the end of the first full week. Fixed expenses are $1067 per week including truck payment, plates, QUALCOMM rental, and insurance. I also have a $.10 per mile charge for tires, IFTA, and mileage charge, which I will get most of back at the end of my lease. That leaves fuel and maintenance fund unaccounted for.

I'm not so sure you can take your prime lp truck to landstar but let's assume you can fit the purpose of this discussion. The exact percentage didn't readout even matter. Its the freight rate that percentage is that matters. Who are primes biggest customers? Grocery warehouses? What freight do you think pays better? That load of cheerios going you Wal-Mart, or the landstar load of cv joints going to a honda plant where if its late the assembly line is shut down and 1500 uaw guys are sitting around picking their nose for 35 bucks an hour?

Orr look at it another way. Assume the money week be the exact same, which us a better opportunity to learn the industry. Taking the loads your dispatcher gives you, or networking and getting loads from 500 agents?

Wow! Say you did 2,500 miles at 6.8 MPG with diesel at $2.75/gallon there's another $1k plus $250 for your 10 cpm IFTA/tires/mileage & you're looking at a total of $2,317/week. If maintenance is 25 cpm you'd have another $625. Total is $2,942. Cost per mile is about $1.17.

Even if that 2,500 miles is done at $1.75/mile you're pulling in $4,375.

Lots of assumptions here but that seems reasoanble. Are you very much different anywhere?
