I waz wondering if anyone has hauled truck loads of lumber and if so what are the good the bad and the ugly of hauling truck loads of lumber ? And which is better step deck or high boy? Assuming they are both 53 ft tandem trailers.

Best have bigger boards in front and rear to jack up the front and rear bundels, or lumber can walk forward if you brake to hard, or just walk backwards on our smooth roads,

Yup. 4x4's each under the front and rear.

We only haul it all the time.

I've hauled wrapped bundles of douglas fir and SPF framing lumber for over two decades. When banded and wrapped they are relatively easy loads. I strap the living snot out of them and have had zero issues hauling it. I don't use a step deck, just a standard 45' flat with spread rear axle. Stacked double high I run out of weight long before I run out of room. I'm lucky that I can go up to 88K lbs on my setup where I run.

I have not had any experience hauling SYP, rough sawn lumber, or anything that is unwrapped.

Don't know your region but I was shown the wedge loading down in the Southeast. In the northwest the loader got out and turned my back 4x6 on its side (in framing its called proud, the bigger dimension vertically) so that it was only 4" up not 6". I didn't see until it was loaded . up there they apparently don't see it done that way but it's good. I'd had a load shift forward before I learned that but never after I started doing it that way.
Carrying (2) 4x6 guaranteed even if they have it strapped over large-ish sticker boards you can still get some slope to it for strapping. The gravity against the slope is more force than you can achieve with straps.
