There not skills based endorsements, there knowledge. Nobody has to drive a double/triple to get that added.

They are blowing smoke up your rear. There are no "practical" tests for your endorsements. they are all knowledge tests. They are telling you this because of their own personal beliefs. If you ask me, you would think they would encourage this as it would make their company look better because their drivers coming out are stocked with all the endorsements. Seems kind of weird they are telling you not to get them.
Again, these endorsements have no skill tests for them. The only ones that I am waiting on now is Hazmat and my X endorsement after that (X=Tanker & Hazmat, Here in GA, even know you may have both endorsements, you can not have this endorsement on a permit) You don't even need to explain anything to the DMV when you go in! All you need to do is go in, pay the fee and tell them you are there to take the endorsement tests.

Depends on what you want it for? Are you only going to be traveling to US, Canada,Mexico and the US Territories via land or boat? If so than you can save money and just get the card. If you EVER want to use it to travel beyond that or go by plane, just pay the bit extra and get both or just the book.

I am thinking for ground travel only.... the last time I travelled internationally, I didn't need a passport of any type because I was on a military ID, in uniform, and on a military charter flight......

Biggest problem I ever had was when I was going through a security checkpoint (pre-9/11), I was in uniform and couldn't pass through a metal detector. The security agent wanted me to take all the stuff (ribbons/awards) off the jacket to pass through... I told him that was NOT going to happen because it took me 2 hours to make it right, took off the coat, handed it to him, went through the metal detector, collected my coat, then walked away..... the look on his face was obviously dumbfounded......

yeah I hear ya. when we traveled in uniform now in the combat uniform they made us take our boots, belts, and dog tags with any metal off. Stupid if you ask me... but hey, rules are rules. Yeah I am thinking the same thing. Now that i seen the price difference, only 55 dollars for the card, may do the same myself!

passport book - good for all over the world (including Mex & Can)

passport card is for ground and sea travel only to Mexico, Canada, US territories only. If you want to fly you have to have passport as well.
