OP here - I have one more HAZMAT question, unrelated to the test and requirements:

Can you drive a HAZMAT load in a team where one has their HAZMAT endorsement and the other does not? If so, what are the parameters?

I'm trying to recall from memory so don't quote the accuracy of my statements.

I believe Indiana gives you 6 months? to amend your license. it took 29 days for me to complete the background check. you cannot drive a placarded vehicle unless you have the endorsement(s).

my advice - get the background check going long before you take the test. take any opportunity given to get a free hazmat endorsement.

No you cannot. Your co driver could haul a hazmat load but you would not be able to drive at all without the hazmat endorsement

That's interesting. I assumed as much, but then I wondered since (as near as I can tell) most of the HAZMAT rules and regs are regarding how to manage your load, not specifically about driving. So it seems that if one authorized person is present, that should suffice. But, again, I assumed that would not be the case.

    Thanks again!

I've been taking the practice tests here on The Trucker's Report for a week now. I'm to the point now where I'm passing it every time. I'll be going to the BMV tomorrow to take the test. I feel confident that to get the endorsement, the practice tests on this site, are plenty.

Above all else, never believe that having past a written test means you have a clue about how to drive with hazmat loads. You are totally depended on the folks who load the trailer knowing what they are doing. Just be extra careful.

It is like $35 to take all the endorsement tests at once. It is $86.5 for the Haz-Mat background.

Is it really important to save that $35 when searching for a trucking job? I tell you, the crap companies will indeed pay for that crap but the better companies out their have no shortage of applicants with all those endorsements in hand. Sure they claim they will pay, but the fact is they have no problem filling the position with someone that walks in the door with all the endorsements needed. So pick your poison: $35 now, or crappy job now.
