Good luck with everything. How to pay the driver will be the easiest part of it all. My company does it all in house but I also have a wife that has been involved in it since day 1 and self taught with Quickbooks.

Finding this said driver and getting them hired will be by far the hardest unless you already know someone.

If you hate tax stuff then maybe use a payroll service. If you don’t pay payroll tax the government will be on you like white on rice. It’s the quickest way by far to bring heat on yourself. You could probably not file end of year returns for 3 years and not get the heat that not filing payroll for 3 months would bring.

I use a CPA that knows trucks.
I send her what is owed to the driver, (Not me other guy) she does all the tax Mumboo jumbo, and I pay 15th of every month what monthly taxes is owed.
She charges me $850/year for all business filings.
Then, I deduct that, well she does, the next year.
The guys wife stops by the CPA and she writes their part of the check after taxes.

I’ve tried mileage, percentage, then daily pay.
It usually works out near the same if you get a good driver.
He gets $1000/week when available for dispatch.
But if he makes more than the $1000 guarantee, he gets 25%
So, yes if his truck gross $5000, he gets his $1000+$250.
He’s happy, we both make a living, and I don’t hear from him unless there’s a problem.

See if there’s a CPA that knows trucks and have a sit down with one.

Awesome thank you. I guess i should have aspirations to have more than 2 trucks one day. So its probably better to learn to do it right. Thanks!

Since you're hiring a driver I would also recommend that you be incorporated as well. You can also talk to business services at OOID or NASTCO. They can help you with all of those issues. The INC is important even if you are an O/O like me just so you protect your personal assets. I own the equipment and my company leases ( yes there is an actual lease) them from me hence the company has no assets.
