Hi guys, i’ve been an O/O under my own authority for few years now. Ive been doing ok and now i’m ready to hire a driver for my 2nd truck that i’m buying.

I’ve never hired anyone before, how do you guys pay your drivers and whats the process of taking out their taxes and what not. I hate doing taxes so i just have my tax guy do everything. Any tips or things that need to be done?

Most tax guys offer payroll service, otherwise something like Quicken Payroll. But if you hate paperwork, someone who actually LIKES paperwork is the way to go.....

As much as i hate paperwork, it doesn’t seem too much work for just 1 driver. Even for my own business as a single truck o/o. I just have a log book and i do all my expenses, calculations, trips and miles all on it. It looks like chicken scratch to some but i can manage it.

I also pay someone for payroll. The biggest issue is finding a good driver. Writing odometer between states and keeping fuel receipts alone seems to baffle everyone.

HR block guy does the taxes at end of year and gives me w2’s but a local family does my payroll and dispatching.

If you can't get it in their heads to jot down miles tell em always keep GPS on. The newer Garmin you can have it set up for that

I pay my drivers in peanuts, they love it because they’re all just a bunch of monkeys
