Here is a web address that may be a help:
.Hours of Service | FMCSA
.At this address you can download logbook examples to study.farmerjohn64 Thanks this. -
It's DOT legal and company approved, so don't try to second guess it.
Even if the facility wasn't kicking me out, if it's still early enough in the day to find truck stop parking, I'm PCing the hell outta there.farmerjohn64 Thanks this. -
Something I see over and over in these threads concerning log books since elogs took over......my company said this or that or do this or that. No. Just no. That is YOUR log book. Elog or paper. It’s still YOUR log book. It doesn’t matter that it’s company owned equipment that YOUR elog is on. It didn’t matter on paper logs that a company gave you pre printed log books. It was YOUR log book. So just because your company as canned msgs to use under on duty time, it doesn’t make them legal, or are you forced to use them. There is a law regarding this, which states in laymen’s terms......just because you have time left on your elog, doesn’t mean your company can force you to keep working. Same holds true as to how you run your log/elog.

Ultimately it is you as the driver that ends up w/the violation. Not your company. So CYA.farmerjohn64 Thanks this.

According to DeLorenzo (fmsca), truckers can even drive on personal conveyance time until they find a safe location to park. Given the lack of safe truck parking, this could be a huge help for drivers.
“We don’t want a driver parking in a lot that doesn’t have any lighting or any protection,” DeLorenzo said according to Transport Topics. “We don’t want anybody parking on the side of the highway where it’s unsafe. You can make the call.”
I usually have 3 places picked to stop when doing my preplan. Starting with my 1st one @ 10 hrs.Two different times all 3 places were full. I have then put myself on P.C. and annotate safe parking. I then move along to the next parking area. Which both times was about 15 - 20 minutes down the road. When I certified my log the next morning I annotated the areas where I tried to stop and said they were full. 2 days later I had a Level 1 inspection. The LEO didn't even question it. No violations. Not a peep from log audit or safety.Wasted Thyme and farmerjohn64 Thank this. -
Once you go on duty or driving at all you start the 14 hour clock, the only way to stop it off duty or sleeper for either 10 hours, or set up a split sleeper. But since your a new driver I would stay away from splits till you fully understand HOS.
I try to get to shippers/recievers when possible the night before I deliver, then stay off dut till your Loaded/Empty.farmerjohn64 and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
I am new so if I am wrong let me know where it says you can ever advance the load using PC?
I was taught you can never move the load forward using PC. Never did they say unless it was shorter distance or better food.... You can only go to the closest safe parking not in the direction of your route. CFI specifically said, "If you have to go 50 miles backwards rather than 10 miles forward do it. " The citation or HOS violation will be all mine if the load moves forward.
Other than that the few posts about 14 hours, 8 hours with break, and 70/8 all are great advice. My son is an engineer with a large company and writes code. We are working on a rolling 3 week clock to help load plan over several weeks. This way if I were to be in the middle of the 70 hours I could still plan how many hours I have solo thru the entire next 70 hours whether it is daily or weekly. When don we hope to load it up as a free app for android and apple.
I still struggle with taking a 2000 mile plus load and knowing if the arrival time will work out. I am using an excel spreadsheet that helps but I will still have my FM double check the longer ones.
Keep working on getting better. To fail without correcting leaves you as a failure. Always work to be better and you will never be a failure. Looking for quick or cheep tricks is never a good idea.D.Tibbitt and farmerjohn64 Thank this.
