ok guys, total newbie here, thoroughly confused on how much weight i can carry...
let me give you my #s and you can all weigh in :)
    i have a 2018 f350 dually & a pj 40ft trailer...

    f350- max GVWR axle weights
    steer--5600
    drive--9900

PJ trailer GVWR is rated @ 25,000 with 2X 12k axles (trailer was de-rated from 30k by dealer for tax reasons {he said})
gooseneck ball is rated at 25,000 also.......

    1st weigh truck no trailer
    steer 5100
drives 4020 ----- 9900max-4020=5,880 available for pin weight
    gross 9120

    2nd weigh truck & trailer
    steer 4880
drive 6040 9900-6040= 3860 left for pin weight?
    trailer 6880
    gross 17,800

    17,800-9120=8,680
by my estimates the trailer weighs 8,680

    now for the confusion,
as far as DOT is concerned when i pull into a scale house, how are they going to look at my weight?
i am plated at 42k (overkill) so safe there, but
1st i thought i can carry 17,120 if distributed correctly?
    trailer axles rating 24,000
subtract base trailer axle weight 6,880
    = 17,120
under 9900 on the drives and 24,000 on the trailer axles....

    or is it 16,320?
    trailer GVWR 25,000
    - 8,680 empty trailer assumed weight
    = 16,320 payload?

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Your plated rating is meaningless, the sticker on the door with the truck and on the plate on the trailer are the only thing that counts, the plate is there to show they collected taxes.

The GCWR for your truck is somewhere between 19500 and 22500 lbs. Check the sticker/plate on the drivers side door.

That is the TOTAL combined weight of the truck and trailer (including your load). You must be at or below the GCWR and at or below the rated axle weight for steers, drives, and trailer tandems.

You can’t run at higher gross weights than you are licensed for. And it also stands to reason you won’t [can’t] reguster (license) for more gross weight than the manufacturer states the vehicle can safely transport

The biggest thing holding you back is that 25k rated gooseneck ball. That's your max for now untill you upgrade that, & you didn't mention if the gooseneck coupler is a 25k or 30k, but you need a 30k there too..

16,320lbs is all I'd load on her till you get a 30k ball & coupler to match. When that's accomplished you can load another 5k on the deck assuming you stay within the axle ratings, the registered weight, & the 25k GVWR of said trailer + GVWR of said truck. I think your looking at 38-39k lbs gross depending on what the truck says in the door jam..

I'd re tag for less weight & get a refund from the IRP office because your paying for at least 3,000 lbs you'll never be able to realize.

Also, you'll kill a pickup in short order running it that heavy. You need this rig to live I'd guess 350k-400k to get out from under payments. Sure, Ford & Ram rate them for around 40k lbs if properly spek'd, but they are not running day in & day out at those weights. Keep your load weights as low as you can. The truck will live much longer if you can keep it in the 22k-30k lb range. Save the heavy loads for the really good paying freight, going short miles, because it will cost you the trucks longevity..

    In simple language...
You're gross wt allowed when you enter a scale is 40,500 based on the numbers you provided.
    15500 for the truck
    25000 for the trailer
Your empty truck & trailer wt (has to include driver, all supplies etc) is 17,800

40,500 - 17,800 = 22,700 gross. If loaded correctly so as you're not over your individual axle limits.

He actually never provided a GVWR for his Truck, only the axle ratings which do add up to 15500lbs, but having some knowledge of Ford pickups, the door jam of that truck says something like 13,000-13,500 GVWR.

Lets call it 38,500 lbs gross for sake of argument till OP lets us know. So actual payload will be around 20,700 if properly distributed..

Also I forgot to mention in my previous post that I'd also say you've got a major gooseneck ball location problem. It must be mounted slightly behind your rear axle as it is stealing weight off your steer.

It needs to be centered above the rear, or ideally 2" to 4" ahead of the rear axle. Its already robbing 220lbs off the steer while empty, it will be worse when loaded. It needs to be adding weight to the steer, or at a minimum at least maintaining the empty steer axle weight.
