I just graduated trucking school and picked up my CDL-A last week . About to start driving with my mentor and upgrade to solo driving late in the month of May.
I've been thinking hard on what to do about a place of residence. I've been living with relatives for a while now but they strongly want me to get my own place (even though I've told them id only be back here few days a month at most ).
The company I signed on with as a rookie driver is not going to pay much , it's going to take some time to get my experience up to the point where I'll have a decent paying gig (at least a year or 2).
Kinda perplexed what to do. Doesnt make much sense to pay half of my monthly income on a place I'll be at like 4 days a month.
Should I just rent some storage and live in my truck ? And stay in some cheap motel on my days off ?
It's kinda hard to find a place that would a) let me park my truck there on my days off and b) charge a reasonable rate to live there considering I'm only there few days a month. Rent in my city seems to be 600-1000 a month not including utilities and other expenses which would wipe out most of my paychecks.
Maybe the best choice is to rent out storage and pay my relatives some reasonable rate to continue taking my off days there until I get a better paying gig..

Which state do you live in?
Here's a good deal in Texas that many truck drivers use.
This company will set you up with a legal Texas, Florida, South Dakota address and you won't have to pay state income taxes. Probably have storage facility available. Have mail services also.

Storage unit where you wanna call home, get a motel room for the time you want out of the truck.
Once you're out of your relatives hair for a month or so, they probably won't mind you being there every once in a while either.Rideandrepair, Rocks, gentleroger and 7 others Thank this. -
I'm thinking they might not care as much if I just find some storage place to fit all my junk. Bc they have a really tiny house with almost no extra space .
That still doesn't solve long term goal of moving into my own place but it'll be less of a problem once I can get some experience and get a decent paying trucking job.Rideandrepair and Rocks Thank this. -
I talked a driver one time that had been living in his truck for 7 years.
He got his mail at a mail forward service at an RV park.
Said he was banking most of his paycheck.
