Lots to ask and lots to learn. When u think u know everything and ur pride gets in the way of you learning and progressing, that's when you need a slice of humble pie.

swiff Thanks this. -
Im not trying to be a buzz killer or knock anyone for starting their own business. Sorry if it sounded that way. I was just stating what first entered my mind as a driver. I wish you all the best and am reminding myself tht those who dont try and experience neither success nor failure find themselves wondering......what if? Best of luck to you. The American dream is still alive and kickin...

I'm currently putting diesel with my CC. Do fuel cards work the same way or do you have to put $$$ in the card before using?
-
I am a single truck owner operator and use a fuel card. I use a Fleet one card through RTS Carrier Services that gives je discounts at TA, Petro, Flying J, Pilot, Sapp and independent stops. You can also fet a Fleetone through other organizations. Check into Condata or even a PrePass fuel card. All of these will give you a cash price or better. Just know that fuel has to be paid in fuel within seven days.

Look I am the nay sayer around here and think that people look at this as a way to make money - it is but it takes work. If you are a cdl holder and driving a truck for someone else, then you can learn how to run a truck, but not a business. Learning the business takes time and most likely if you enter into this business, you may fail quickly unless you have the reserve to pay the bills for the three months you won't get paid or have to deal with other issues.
if you are looking to make this a business for the long term, then it takes more than just the desire, and the first step is to learn before committing to anything. You are off to the wrong start - being honest.
your I first step should be whether or not you want to risk all you own to own a business which is highly competitive, where people with years experience still fail and where one accident can put you our out of business and loss everything. This is not a business for people who have marginal finances to buy a truck and expect to play with the big boys. Just trying to find the right company structure costs money, deciding to be a corporation or have a couple to lessen your taxes is a decision made with an accountant who knows your situation, not a website that sells you paper to register one.
Hiring drivers is a big pia, I've done it and hate it, even with years of experience, it is difficult to find the right one who will take care if your property as it was their own. Then you have to understand what the rules for employees or contractors and what you have to have.
I've touched on only a couple things, there are a bunch more to learn, is my suggestion is to be a driver first, learn by driving first, get some goals and start using the money you have to get the right information and the right people to guide you.Redman30, swiff and Krooozerrr Thank this. -
Question, do you have any connections or real world experience in trucking, or did you just wake up one day and decide to start a trucking company. I'll tell you, it's not going to be easy to make money with one truck and someone driving it for you.

I know he asked about getting plates and the driver paying fuel and he signed up for a load board but do you have your authority already? May need that.
-
I have a family friend doing the same thing. It is working out for him. And I pray it works out for me too. I signed up for my own authority.
