How loud is it in the truck when you are driving?

I have 20 years as a card carrying union Piledriver. My hearing is still excellent due to wearing earplugs every day out there on the job whether we were driving pile or not. I looked at it as I would my hardhat or boots, a necessary piece of safety equipment for me to do my job. I got teased and cajoled about it too, many times by the same guys who will be using devices to help them hear when I will be seeing them at the Old Timer's picnics in the future.

I believe you can restore *some* of your lost hearing by wearing earplugs and you can prevent losing it in the first place by wearing them. I can hear the Mosquito lol.

 

You wouldn't be able to hear it because you have your windows up and drive a truck. Heck, even with your windows down you wouldn't here the ambulance untill it was right beside you... that's why you're supposed to check your mirrors regularly.

Lupe, if you wear earplugs, don't do anything that would make someone honk at you, and Take them out before talking to Law Enforcement becasue nobody going to pull u over for having them in your ears because no one going to be able to see them. I've wore them from time to time for reasons.

IMO earplugs are a good thing to use when sleeping...so you don't hear the reefer, GPU, or other trucks pulling in/out. But you will still hear stuff....so adding some music with ear-buds was my suggestion....IMO one should not drive with ear-plugs in for the stated safety reasons....they might be a terrific option if teaming....so you don't hear the chatter of the CB or talk radio, etc.

 

driving with earplugs in would be like driving with blinders on
trucks and reefers are not loud enough anymore to warrent ear plugs
it is one of the senses that you usewhen driving---why impair it with ear plugs?

 

Seems to me like most earplugs just reduce the unwanted noise. You can still hear sirens, problems with the truck, etc.

 

I suffer from tinnitus, and I operate a pneumatic tanker so I know a little about hearing protection.

Most newer trucks are silent compared to the older ones. Volvos are some of the quietest ones I know of so I wouldn't be to worried about it. Trucking is not that loud of a job anymore. The worst was driving highway speeds with the windows down.

They do have earplugs that will reduce the DB level without changing the frequency response. But it is not safe to attenuate your hearing while driving.

 

I used to wear the in ear and earcups over the outside (dual protection) when operating an Electric Shovel (Quarry) and Dropball. What got my hearing loss was a truck tire blowing up in my face with my ear 1.5 feet from it. If it were not for that, my hearing would be great for my age.

Anyone every try the Walkers Game ear? It cuts out the loud back ground noise but still lets You hear. A lot of people that hunt with firearms use them so They don't lose their hearing.
