How realistic is it to make 75-80k a year eventually?

Not rare at all. Not even topped out on pay yet, we have about 40 local drivers between Our Lansing and Joliet yards and ill bet most have broke 80k.
No reason why 1st yr drivers here cant make 70k.

One of the things to consider is the risk involved in the business. Not only is it one of the most dangerous professions, one glitch, one moment of inattention, one wind gust in Wyoming, and your career comes to a screeching halt (see what I did there ;)? ) . A rear end, roll over, a couple of illegal lane changes, and it's off to a second chance company to work for peanuts. Some of it you can manage, some of it is just dumb luck.

Yep, but think of all the glory and respect you get! Let alone the big bucks.

.. and although no benefits or pension, you make more than drive driving for Uber or Lyft and I'd imagine it's a lot more fun too.

This is what one can typically make driving for rideshare in So Cal. This is my recent "stub" of actual take home pay. If you get up early and keep rolling, you can easily do 20 rides a day and still have time at end of day to wind down. You average about $10 a ride, about two rides an hour. If you work harder, you can get weekly bonuses ($75, $135, $200, $350). This stub does not include peak hour rides bonuses. You are paid on a 1099. Taxwise, Much of this earnings is written off if you take the standard 0.54 a mile deduction. You can track your mileage using an app like triplog that automatically calculates your deduction. If the pay were 50% higher, I would not bother getting a CDL. Alas...[IMG]
