I am the wife of an owner-operator here in Garner, NC and we were running under another company but it has gotten slow, to the point our truck has not moved in a month. I have gotten some leads on some lanes. So how do I ask a company to let us run some of the loads? I just want to use the right verbiage.

Face to face if possible, asking for the opportunity to service their accounts. Stating your experience and safety record. Emphasize condition of equipment (assuming it's good) and a back-up plan in case you have commited to a load but suddenly have equipment failure or illness. You might get 4 no's before you get a yes. In other words, in March they say no, you go back in May, they say no again, you return in July and they say "yes" ! Luck to ya'

If your truck has not moved for a month move on. No reason to wait and if you found a customer then go after with your own authority. Why give them more money when they cannot even move you for a month?

    how to say it?

    I'm leaving.

If your truck sat for more than a week without work, then it is time to move to another company.

If you have gotten leads on some freight - provided that they are more than addresses with phone numbers from the yellow pages - see about getting your own authority. Why make your carrier happy, since they don't care about you? See if that freight could be all yours.

Before, get some insurance quotes and see if you could be all right with that. And don't forget to check your savings account, you need enough cash for at least 2-3 months.

    Is your current company seasonal?
    Were they paying well?
Ask them when do they think it will pick up.
Tell them you have reached the point where you have to explore other options.
Don't burn bridges, you may need them in the future.
There are a million companies out there looking for a truck. Good luck!!!

I worked for a mega once. At the orientation they said if you able to acquire a new customer, for instance one in your home town. As a reward they would let you do the run. Lol. No bonus, percentage, nothing. Just let you service their new customer. Reminded me of a campaigning politician, always promising jobs. Give me a job, and I’ll get you a job. No thanks. Never had a problem finding a job. Get busy, look after your own interests. No reason to be down for a month, unless by Choice. I doubt they care about much more than themselves. You’re not the first to have that idea. I’m sure it may actually happen and work sometimes. Things change so fast, and so often, better to move on, find steady work. It’s everywhere.
