How to start out? In my case that is.

Hello all! I hope all of you have been doing swell. I was wishing to talk about how one might get into hotshot trucking within my given circumstances in life.
-I am married. Wife is employed part time, does not really make enough to mention here.
-I am currently a company flatbed truck driver making anywhere between 5k-6k a month before taxes. Yes I know, it is not the greatest even for a company driver, and there are probably better gigs out there. However, in my area (middle of Kansas....not to many options). Been a driver for 1.5 years now.
-I currently, do not own any real assets worthy of any value (its a pro and con honestly).
    -I rent out a single wide. $1150 a month.
-I am still paying off a vehicle that we purchased for my wife, roughly $8500 left, $320 a month.
-My primary vehicle is a 1993 Ford F-250, 351W, E40D transmission, 2WD. Between 189,000 miles - 195,000. Completely paid off, no rust, brand new rebuilt 351W (only 1500 miles). I have owned it since 2019. Honestly only thing left to break is the transmission and differential, everything else has been replaced. 3.55 Rear end. GVWR 8800lbs, LT 235-85-16 Tires
-I have roughly 20k in the bank.

Okay, so in short I wish to get into a hot-shotting. Financially it seems way easier than trying to buy a big rig and trailer. Also would be way easier to find the room to park the darn thing at the house. Realistically it also seems like the easier thing to do in my circumstance, in which case I would all your guys opinions on if my outlook is foolish or not. Im just going to say it, would it be wise or foolish to try to hotshot in my old Ford? Just to get my foot in the door until I can afford something better? Or would I actually be losing money trying to run her. The motor is solid. She just lacks any real power compared to modern motors. After I rebuilt her and beefed her up, she makes about 240hp, 395lb ft tq. I know she's not a diesel, and gas motor will wear out infinitely faster in this line of work. I also realize that I would have to install a higher rear end gear, probably 4.10s. I realize that a GVWR of 8800lbs is low, but if I was to get a smaller trailer, how truly debilitating would that be?

I am trying to get into this, with what I have if I can. Im just trying to find the best way to go about this, I am sorry if this all seems a bit jumbled. I just have a lot of thoughts going through my head.

I do truly appreciate all of your guys/gals responses, and if there is any more needed information I hope that I can provide it, in a satisfactory way!
(uploaded a photo of old Dorthy, yes she has Orange peel. I did the best I could outside behind my shed when I repainted her.) IMG_20250908_182550.jpg

So your current gig pays enough that you just put a rebuild in your pick up, pay $1150 a month for rent, car payment AND have $20K in the bank and you want to do something riskier?

    I;m missing something here.

The question in itself is getting into hot shotting with where I am at in life. All the other questions are in the post.

You asked so here goes..I’m going with foolish 100%.
You’re not doing bad at all where you are at income wise right now. Your idea is going to get you nothing but divorced and living in your pickup. I’d stick to 18’s look to get into a better situation like Walmart and provide a good life for you and your wife.

That pickup isn’t going to make you anything but depressed and suicidal. Even if you had a new duality it wouldn’t matter.. you won’t make enough to exist for long.

Personally I think you just need to redirect the thoughts in your head.

I appreciate all the effort to type out your response you gave. But I would like some clarification. And sorry if some of these are dumb.
#1: Why do you even with a newish pickup that I would not exist for long?
#2 Were you referencing a person when you mentioned 18's?

Also to explain some more, I'm not trying to be foolish. But much like my Father, I am very much my own man. Except he went the head store manager route, and I am not a people person so that was not for me lol. I do not like being a company driver, it leaves me feeling vey much unfulfilled. Constantly feeling like I can do more, exceed more, be more. Im bored of being a company driver. Im not trying to do this on a whim, I have always wanted to be more. For some people my lifestyle would be enough, but to me, it depresses me. I need more, Im hungry. And I am not trying to knock anybody who is comfortable being a company driver. Sorry if it comes across that way.

I appreciate the concern for my marriage, but let me tell you....she ain't goin nowhere. She has stuck by my side this long, through 2 month's absences for work. Plus, pretty sure no one else could handle her lmao.

I hope this somehow explains a little bit more.

    Cheers!

    What about a trailer?

I’d take the $20k and put a down payment on a house before I went trailer trucking, if I were you.
