The winning strategy will always be a paid off mortgage. The psychological impact, freedom, of not having a home mortgage makes the $600 savings there by keeping the debt ridiculous.road_runner, BoostedTeg, Banker and 2 others Thank this.

You are correct we survived but I am not going back! We didn’t have central air in the house until I was 10 years old in 1976, we did have a very strong attic vent that was turned on to evacuate the hot air before bedtime. Mom and Dad had a window unit but their door was closed. When I started my trucking career in 1987 at CF, extra city drivers used an old cab over road tractor which was a single axle spring ride with no AC and no power steering. I made it just fine then and loved my job but I sure wouldn’t do it now in the same equipment. I could, but I wouldn’t because I don’t have to.Carpenter Scotty, jmz, FullMetalJacket and 2 others Thank this.

To me, debt is debt. The only psychological difference is found interest rates and what happens in default.
If life gets "interesting ", and a person misses a mortgage payment the bank cant just kick them out. There's plenty of time to cure the default before seizure. Not so much with an auto loan. Not to mention receiving equity after seizure. So for me, psychologically a home loan is much preferable to an auto loan.
For you $600 over a year might not be worth it. How about $1,200? $2,000? Say you're completely debt free but have no cash. Do you take out a heloc at 3% or get an auto loan at 7%? Its the same amount of debt, just one way costs $1,500 more.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
Pyschologically carrying debt and trying to justify it is a loser mentality. You'll always be slaving to your debts when your first priority isn't just to get rid of them. When you're working a debt snowball whatever the interest rate on one debt versus another doesn't even enter the equation when deciding which one to pay off first. Pay off the smallest first then move on to the next. Also,, when life happens and a big unexpected cost rears it's ugly head a person who has a mortgage versus not having one which situation would you prefer to be in? The answer is obvious one is a much lower pressure scenario.BoostedTeg and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this.
