$800 a week?

 

Okay, here’s the skinny on tankers home daily type work.
You GOTTA have hazmat, and tank (x endorsement) if you want to play in this sandbox.
The money is better than most trucking modes, as there’s more drivers that want no part of the risks than there are those willing to do it.
Tankers are less forgiving than any other mode of trucking.
Gas hauling is easier than dry bulk, and that’s easier than smooth bore chemical/food grade.
Gas trailers are compartmented, and don’t really slosh much unless the compartment is less than 75% full, and diesel is the worst for that.
Dry bulk doesn’t slosh, but it is really top heavy, and really easy to tip over in turns.
Smooth bore chemical is the least forgiving by far.
That whole load is sliding around, and it takes a bit to get accustomed to it.
Turns are challenging. You gotta set up for them to ensure you’re slow enough to avoid tipping over. Especially in the yard- it’s really easy to turn too sharp while going slow and send that thing over backwards.
Is it dangerous? Absolutely.
It’sa thinking man’s game.
Thinking 5 steps ahead to keep you and your load safe.

Having your x endorsement is a license to print money in my opinion.
You’ll make more with it than without it.
Anybody can bump a dock.
Anybody can throw straps.
I’m not bagging anyone that does those for sure, it’s just not for me.
Tankers are a totally different game and it’s not for everybody.
Personally, it’s the only game I’ll play in trucking.
It’s the easiest money I’ve ever made.
Each day is a new game, a new puzzle to solve, and that to me is the fun of it.
I love this game.

 

Most home daily tanker jobs are 12 hour days. You won't have time to commute very much. Move to where the job is located.

 

for hazmat, may also "have to have" a TWIC card to gain access to the tank storage yards......i know i NEEDED that TWIC card to do so.

 

Good post but how exactly does a tanker turn over backwards? I've never seen that happen.

 

I’d take the advice of both @motocross25 and @Arctic_fox and look at Bones out of Ottawa Kansas, having spoke with Paul in the past, they seem like a company that actually cares about the well being of their employees and their company and seem pretty open to any and all opportunities to work around a drivers needs, you’re in a good area for their freight.

 

Have you looked into hauling trash? From the transfer station to the landfill.

 

I don't know specifics on any companies in your area, but you did mention that you had "health concerns". I wonder if that is what's holding you back. I figured out many years ago that trucking is a poor career for those with health issues, especially anything that will keep you close to home. Ironically, local jobs are almost always more physically demanding than OTR jobs. Perhaps it's time to consider a change of profession?
