At least in Illinois it wasn’t a problem when I took the test…around 12 years ago. All they seemed to care was that you were competent to operate it. The last person I helped to get a license (before the stupid school rules) didn’t double clutch and passed. He told me that the examiner made him put it in neutral while going down the road then slowed down 15mph and wanted to see him pick up the right gear and take off.

I never "double" clutched, either. There is no reason to push in the clutch pedal twice, other than as a timing ritual. Depending on the condition or existence of 7synchronizers in your transmission, every tranny requires a different amount of time for the shaft speeds to equalize. My first truck had a Spicer 7-speed hooked to a Detroit 6v-92T, and it shifted almost as quick as a car. Drove a Maxidyne once, and you could almost eat your lunch between gear-out and gear-in. All the extra pushing of the clutch between is just wasted motion....

For the many years I drove an Eaton/Fuller 9-speed, all I ever needed to do to time the shift was pull the shifter out of gear, pause at neutral, and slide int the next gear, foot holding the clutch the whole time.....

    Meanwhile

The rest of us don't ever touch the clutch unless stopped.

Learned on a 9800 International 10 speed back in 1996....currently driving tankers.

    Only super truckers use manuals.

Detroit put CAT out of business with transmissions. Nobody on this forum can dispute that.

CAT wanted Eaton to make it up by upgrading the 18 speed, but Detroit transmissions have been proven bulletproof.

Nicholson gave me mine, had the hook on one hand. The lady gave me the pretrip and skills part. When he asked her about it she said his pretrip sucked but skills were 0 pull ups they voted to pass me. Maybe cause they didn’t want smell that stinkin ### cow wagon again. We drove down made the right by Walter Lewis’ then around Holden Conner corner back to airbase. Pretty easy deal.

the lady gave my test, last name hatch, (her son is a tattoo artist in little rock now)hook was off that day, then after i passed they asked me to drive the lil truck and flatbed to testing center because they guy that had it(can’t remember is name right now) was out of town.
So i brought that old abf truck(someone put a short gear stick in it, it was below my knee and had to lean down every time to shift it.
She made me get on interstate run to exit 80, turn and come back through town.
