    I have a great job for 3 1/2 months a year and would like to drive the other 8 months. Ultimately I’d like to lease on with Schneider. My plan is to get my CDL in September and get my 6 months experience before I have to go back to work around May 15th. While I work May 15th-August 30th I would be able to take a few trips/month to stay current. I’m looking for flexibility in where I go and seems like Schneider’s load board would be the ticket. Since I want to lease with Schneider should I try to do my company driver stint there? Would they be interested knowing I wanted to only drive long enough to lease on with them. My wife was thinking of doing it also but ultimately we don’t want to be stuck with team routes. However she would be awesome at keeping on the board and keeping us running. I have no grand delusions of quick riches. In fact at 56 yrs old it is more our next adventure.

    Do you have a multi and an A&P ? Neptune was looking for people for fire season. It's a little late in the year now but it might not hurt to check with them anyway.
    How about cotton work? A lot of cotton around here is night work but once you get dialed in to that it isn't bad.

    If you go ahead with Schneider give some thought to driving for them for awhile before you make the step to leasing. There's a lot more there than meets the eye.

    I’ve been flying year around and just now cut back. My flying career is winding down. I’ve owned successful businesses so I realize all the other stuff. I wouldn’t lease a truck from them either.

    USA Truck has a program where, after 6 mos with the company, you can choose your loads and run where your want to. Ask a recruiter for details. No, i'm not a recruiter, so whatever you decide doesn't affect me.

    I really hope there dry van load boards are better than their tanker boards… I had a guy who went through the same class at me.. soon as he met their requirement for their program he purchased a truck with them…seen some of his settlements… and after insurance/ truck payment etc he was taking home right around the same amount I was and I was a regional driver. He just got to pick his loads..take away his truck payment and ins it added up to be about 80$ A day more than what I was making. A whole lot of risk for a small biscuit.. considering I could’ve went the training engineer route and made the same … but that was 2018/2019… if you do go with Schneider make sure the Math actually Maths

    @AgPilot1, former Schneider driver here....

    Schnieder was my first driving gig out of CDL school (got the CDL thru a local college/tech school).

    I drove the better part of 2 years for them--first in their OTR division, then later in intermodal.

    Given where the economy is likely headed--and based on my experiences at the "Big Orange"....I think Chinatown's suggestion above (in post #4) is actually a MUCH BETTER place for you.

    USA Truck's "Drive Your Plan" self dispatch program will get you load board experience up-front--where you can learn to operate like an independent contractor with the security of still being employed by the company.

    USA Truck (driveusatruck.com)

    and

    USA Truck Introduces Self-Dispatch Program - Drivers - Trucking Info

    Schnieder has no such similar program, to the best of my knowledge.

    And no--I'm not a recruiter for USA Truck, either--I haul fuel now (hazmat tanker), in north FL & south GA.

    Use the best person that can disable an alarm system and make sure you keep a running get-a-away car with a driver that stays awake. In and out in 10 minutes tops!!!!

    USA requires 12 months OTR experience to qualify for the self dispatch program. I either have to find a company that will allow me to drive 8 months a year or go O/O. Schneider might not be the best but they are one of the few that allow you to lease on with 6 moths CDL experience. After a year with Schneider I could look elsewhere if I don’t like them because I would meet the experience requirements of more companies. And I’m not set on going to Schneider. I just can’t find many companies that would take me with 6 months experience. Ideally I could find a place to drive for 8 months and take 4 off.

    This is why I want in now. Everything in life works in cycles. When truck prices fall because all the get quick rich guys are bailing I want to be ready! I don’t need to make a killing now.
