I know the feeling....between Jegs, Summit, LMC, and a few other suppliers, I'm about $15K into the 25 year old truck I bought for the wife that probably wouldn't book for more than $4 or 5K on a good day. But on the plus side, there won't be anything else like it on the road when I'm done...

This is my wife's toy/daily driver. Has a book value of maybe $5000. Its a 99 35th anniversary GT.

Tore the motor down, Forged steel crank from a 2004 Cobra, Eagle H-beam rods, forged manley 9.3:1 pistons. Hand ported the heads, Crane split duration blower cams. Has a little Vortech S-trim blower with a Vortech air to water inner cooler. Makes 557 rwhp with 12 psi of boost. Tremec TKO 600 transmission, BBK long tube headers. H&R sport springs, Saleen torq bar on the rear, 3.73 Ford motorsport gear on a Detroit locker 8.8 differential. 33 spline Strange axles. Aftermarket Mach1 style wheels,.. 275/40 rubber up front,.. 315/35 rubber out back. An absolute blast to drive. I've got roughly $20k into it.

    .

This is my money pit right here. 4 motors,.. each time I tell myself this one will be the one and I get bored with it. Been in the process of building a 427ci LSx based engine that should net somewhere between 1200 - 1500hp this time with a single Garret and air to air. Had the car for roughly 10 yrs now. Had others,.. but this one stayed. I've probably sunk $60k - $70k into it over the years. Like everything else I own,.. my wife would probably divorce me if I sold it to get something else.

Invest in yourself-- open a traditional IRA right away for $5500 to avoid 15% capital gains tax on the $5500 and only pay the capital gains on the other $500. Later on when you retire perhaps the original $5500 has near doubled and your tax bite might be way down in the single digits on the gains.

Give it to your parents. Or save it for a college fund.
