Had a friend of mine get killed several years ago by one of those latches. He made the mistake of standing over it while trying to unlatch it. Blew open and almost blew him in half.

Don't get me wrong, there is a real danger for sure. Even if it's less than 5psi it's still a really large volume of air. So it doesn't hurt to be careful.Last edited: Nov 11, 2023
Speed_Drums and Redtwin Thank this. -
Sure, if you have some kind of death wish. One of our main rules was never to go on top of a pressurized trailer.
If it's taking a long time to release pressure, either install better valves and plumbing, or just sit there reminding yourself you get paid by the hour.RockinChair, Bud A. and Redtwin Thank this. -
We go up top to vent trailers everyday. Just don’t open the main dome.

Sure wish I did get paid by the hour

Yeah I know I am being a wimp.

There is also the concern of getting sprayed with orange oil residue. That stuff is pungent and doesn't wash out of clothing easily. I like looking fresh and clean. Yup, I'm not a real trucker.Buffalonytrucker92, Speed_Drums and Nashville Thank this. -
I actually do when I do that run. It's because the tanks get dropped in Bensalem and it's only a 60 mile trip from there to the customer so it would be criminal to only get paid mileage when delivery will take half the day.
It's only $20 per hour so it's not like the hourly pay fully compensates for the time lost unloading but it's better than the mileage only we used to get for that load. -
I didn't know food loads got aired off I thought that was only chemicals.
Redtwin Thanks this. -
No that's fair, I wouldn't want that crap on me either. When I open the top for some of these yeast loads and the pressure starts to bleed out, I'm very conscious about not getting yeast on me. Yeast kinda grosses me out for some reason lol I still eat bread daily thoughRedtwin Thanks this.

The product I am referring to isn't a food product even though it is considered "food grade". It's a citrus oil derived from orange peels. I think it is used to make cleansers (it smells kinda like Cilit Bang etc)and air fresheners. It is flammable so is classified as hazmat. It's not the nasty kind of hazmat so if it gets on your skin it's not too big of a deal.Speed_Drums, asphaltreptile311 and Cobrawastaken Thank this.
