    Soooo the details…

My partner and I have a company which is an LLC owed 50/50 by our two businesses.

It started as a local junk hauling, demolition and dumpster rental company which required us to have a DOT number due to weights. We in turn started a hotshot portion to this and got an MC number.

Progressive was the only one who would quote us and has us at a 500 mile radius.

We have purchased a tractor (WS 4900FA) for local work, however Progressive is aiming to keep even that truck under a 500 mile radius and wants to quote 85k for the year due to the federal and state filings.

    What are my options fellas?

Move all the local operations insurance to one of the parent companies with no filings? Other companies?

    HELP!

    Located in Michigan.

    85k….wtf
I guess they think you’re high risk…..which is why other companies won’t quote it?
Mine are all on nationwide….. and all 3 of them combined and some trailers are significantly less than that they’re on a 250 mile radius which does help

I’m guessing the quote is high due to how many assets they are trying to insure. I know if I add another truck my premiums would double..

@Ridgeline is from Michigan and possibly knows exactly what’s happening..

Michigan requires all commercial vehicles to have a DOT number, weight has nothing to with it. My neighbor has a masonary contracting business, he had to get DOT numbers when he was pulled over by MSP, they ticket him for driving his station wagon with the name on the side, and now it has a DOT number.

I don't get why you would need to get an MC number unless you are expanding into Ohio, Indiana or Wisconsin.
    Why?
Why again? What are you going to use it for - details.

There is something missing like the driver's driving record and how many there are. I don't see I have seen $60k quote for new authorities, but not $85k.

We have high insurance because of the litigation risks, stupid asinine fees and a government that forces everyone into a fund that we don't get much out of, even after "reforming" the insurance.

So did the op actually call other commercial providers or just pull it off the web site?

Hm… I just got a new quote, 2 trucks, 4 trailers, they put international on “stationary” cause I’ve not hired anyone since letting the NFnG go.
BUT, if I do hire someone it’ll go up $3000/year. But if I let him go I can put truck back in stationary, and still am able to drive it myself if mine goes for , it just if I wanna move it and say do a local load.

they said 3 dot clean inspections helped me out. Was 17250, but they dropped it to that cause of them.

Really hard to compare our numbers since our operations, locations and circumstances are both on different planets. Just one small detail, I have had more in loss runs than the total value of your equipment..

I think the op needs to separate his local operations from his interstate operations. If he keeps it all in one business it’s all going to be put under interstate.
I worked for a company out of Michigan that had two separate numbers, one for the local milk operation and another for the interstate meat side.
Wasn’t uncommon for them to be audited on both companies at the same time.

Roughly half of the states require you to have state numbers as well as MC if you are picking up and drlivering within the same state. Its amazing how many folks don’t know of this until an audit…
