Small aircraft have run red instrument lights for years. Some of the the high dollar~big power chicken trucks I drove ran red or purple interior lights. It does help on the those dark rainy PNW nights.

Supposedly red lights will let you sleep again if you wake up at night (the reason they are red).
As to redlights and windshield lighting. Here is a youtube vid on it @D.Tibbitt

Freightliner calls them footwell lights and they are awesome! Lights up the floor board but in a way that you really only notice if your looking down. I wish Peterbilt installed them at the factory.

    D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

I think the idea of the red map light is to lessen the dilation of pupils, at night. Keeping pupils smaller, to avoid the quick adjustment that happens when other headlights hit your eyes. The goal being to avoid eyes getting tired quickly ( sleepy) at night.

I have red lights in my cab and sleeper, cuts the recovery time down after somebody you meet is too dumb to shut their brights off, also doesn't attract mosquitos as bad in summer when sleeping with the windows down.

stacks, Rideandrepair and 650cat425 Thank this.
