O/O- was a small fleet owner with his own authority but when the going got tough closed shop because rates were bad and it’s everyone’s fault. Now wants to look for a place to work and fit in. And wants to give me advice and tell me what I’m doing wrong and what I need to do after I explain to him, a general, brief of how I run things and my expectations .
ME-No thanks, I’m ok. I think I’ll follow my plan, since I’m still in business. I need a O/O that can serve the company so it can fulfill its mission. In return payment is processed. Easy right?!?
O/O- Discussion on the great many things that he has done over the years in trucking and does not want to do them now.
Me- I could care less about what you have done unless it benefits what you will do for the company today. I would rather pay for the guy you were instead of the guy interviewing today.
O/O-Likes the money I’m promising until I inform him that it requires more stops, care, cleanliness, etc. Only wants to be out 3-5 days, but those jobs are mainly seasonal and are ending.. Blames everyone about the demise of trucking, -actually rambles off and says “yada, yada.”
Me- At this point I may actually enjoy a dispatch service soliciting call from Lahore to move on from this O/O.
Silly thing, I have about the same conversation with different O/O at least 2-3 times a week. Don’t these guys realize that being leased on, that I am the customer and I am the one that pays for their services. I’m not their union shop counselor.
Interview gone bad

As such while you do retain much more freedom then a normal company driver. You also need to sell youself to that carrier the same as you would to a broker or any other customer. Ok why should they hire YOU vs that dude over there? What do YOU bring to the table he does not? How will hireing YOUR company profit mine?
There is of course room for dickering always. But remimber the more you demand the less attractive you are to the customer unless you offer something in return. Course in my time in as an O/O ive seen huberious, poor planning, sloth and entitlement are some of the biggest reasons these O/Os fail and they ALWAYS blame someone else for it. So i am unsuprised at the OPs story. -
So when does he start ?

I didn't recruit him, he just showed up uninvited. He left the same way he came in...broke and pissed off.
