First of all, how can a fuel pump destroy an engine?
Second, is this only on Internationals, or all Cummins engines?

The fuel pump issue is on the ISX CM-2250 and CM-2350. These are the motors that are single cam and use a high pressure fuel pump to deliver the fuel to the injectors vs the second cam that powered the injectors mechanically like on the older CM-871 and CM-870 and older motors. The fuel pump internals, the plungers and tappets, disintegrate and small shards of steel and or ceramic enter the fuel lines, and head directly in to the motor. Very well documented problem, and when the metal enters the motor, it takes out everything, including the crank. There is normally one crated up at my local International dealer to go to the scrap yard.
These motors went live in 2011 I believe, they are found in all manufacturer trucks. The new ISX motor, I don't know what they have done with that, but I do know it is the same design, one cam and high pressure pump.
Cummins had a recall, but ended it soon after starting after switching from ceramic plungers to steel plungers and new tappets. The problem still persists, the fix did not work. Fuel pumps now need to be monitored closely and rebuilt every 300,000 to 400,000 miles, if not sooner.csmith1281 and Heavyd Thank this. -
We lost a 13 Cummins last year with 340k miles. Fuel pump plungers come apart and get directly into the oil system and lock it up tight. 8 weeks and about $45k. Crank and cams were toast. Said the block was junk too.

To late now but Cummins had an update for that a long time ago .csmith1281 Thanks this.

Are they not covering that under warranty?

About 1/2 of it.

They're still having that issue? A few years ago before Pete went to paccar engines every time l went to my local dealer they had a Cummins powered truck in the bay in a million pieces for that same issue. They took their sweet time approving it for warranty too. Pushed a few guys to the brink of bankruptcy I'm sure.

I've had to drive 3 different 2574 tractors for many years, get rid of one , hope for something nicer only to be stuck with another. They all had ISM 320's in them, the only nice thing was that they had 13 spds in them.nothing but dash problems and leaking roofs, I have nothing nice to say about them
