I think it's easier to double clutch once you have a feel for floating. Floating gives you more "feedback" about how close you are to making the shift so you have a better idea of where you need to be.

Drive how you want and think about what they say, and if it makes any sense to you.

To the OP, double clutching is the right way to drive but when you gain experience, you will find that once you get the truck moving, you don't even need to use the clutch. Some call it floating while others just call it shifting. I took my boss out in a truck the other day to pick up his car from a dealer and he was amazed how smooth I can shift once the truck got moving, it wasn't floating that made the shift but timing.

    What??

You just rev the motor and then hold the stick until the grinding stops and the truck moves?

Agree you must be able to do both. Sometimes trying to float but going over a slight bump in the road, doesn't want to go in so have to be quick with the clutch foot. Other times might want to float and discover you might dump too much torque into the drive line so better to smooth transition the power back in with the clutch.

I figure you'll choose floating after the calf cramps set in. Is floating proper to do? Maybe not according to DOT and mechanics or a super trucker, but Who Cares. My transmissions have never broke driving 70 different trucks.JMO
