Start with the lowest possible dose of melatonin, since even the lowest dose of 1mg is 10-100 times what your body normally produces. BTW, the common side-effects from taking too much melatonin is night sweats and nightmares. If you continue taking melatonin your body will turn off it's "melatonin factory", so in that sense you may become dependent on it for sleep. I've noticed over time you may feel the need to increase your dose to have the same sleep inducing effect.

Another effective sleep aid is liquid sleep aids like Zzquil. It's like Nyquil but without the cold remedy ingredients. Any form (liquid, tablet, capsules, etc) is as effective as any other. I find the liquid form causes drowsiness more quickly. I would avoid Tylenol PM which contains acetaminophen and diphenhydramine if you are taking Tylenol for pain relief. It's very easy to take liver-damaging doses of Tylenol by just slightly exceeding the daily recommended maximum dose.

I was "addicted" to them for about a year I'd run hard then take one or a sleep aid and lights out , I'd be up fully energized before my 10 hour break was done . It helped me force my body to sleep any hour , quit that #### once I got a better gig.

My doctor started me with 40 mg Melatonin and weaned me down to 10 mg.
    10 mg Melatonin
    500 mg Magnesium
    30 ml ZzzQuil liquid
All that and still struggle for a good nights sleep. Been that way since 19 years old.

I am barely ever tired. I know it’s not healthy. I know my heart is getting tore up. Just hard to sleep if I’m hardly ever sleepy. Being alert was important years ago overseas, now, later, with grey in beard, I’m still alert. I know it’s silly, but it may be the reason I switched from over dimensional to Reefer.

Reefer is perfect for people who don't sleep.

    I sleep so well usually.
My wife actually jokes about it.
I sleep right through storms, dogs barking outside, her watching TV in bed, and almost everything else.
I lay down, and 15 minutes later I am out for the night, my cellphone alarm clock wakes me up.
