WEL hires recent graduates as well. I'm not sure what they start pay at.

I was with Swift for over 4 years myself. I left due to a severe lack of equipment (trucks and trailers) and lousy maintainence staff. Other than that, I'd still be with them. Lots of miles, they ran me nationwide and let me take hometime wherever I wanted. I had a great DM. If they could have eliminated the waiting period for a truck, eliminated all the wasted time hunting for an empty trailer, and hired some decent mechanics.......well, no company is perfect, I suppose.

To the OP- keep researching. This site is a great tool for students. In addition to Swift, look at Conway Truckload, Crete, Roehl, Millis Transfer, and Transport America. Just some suggestions from my reasearch. All the above hire newbies.

certainly appreciate all the guidance very helpful. my first step with a company in this industry is very important and want to make a very educated decision, certainly don't want to jump around with companies, just want to hit the ground runnin.. i have been looking over some of the experiences new drivers had with trainers.,and some not to freaken good, 4-6 weeks seems to be an awful long time. obviously training is very important but #### 4-6 weeks ?? i wanna roll....:biggrin_25515:

if thats the case , look hard a schneider. For such a short OTR training period they are a very safety oriented company. Decent enough starting pay too. BUT thats dependent on the route/job you apply for. schneiderjobs.com.

I went to trucking school almost 2 years ago. The school invited recruiters from Gordon, Werner, Covenant, CRST, System Transport to come talk to us. I had prehires from all these companies. I would talk to them once then they wouldn't return phone calls, I suspect because I had brought my wife to the school's orientation and prior to that I came in with my infant son in a stroller to sign up for the school, I think the secretary was working against me telling these recruiters I was married with a kid and would most likely not make it.

One of my classmates said he applied to Swift and was already scheduled for orientation, so I applied (online) as well and was contacted within the hour. The school was not happy with my choice in Swift-- they indicated they were about half a gear up from CRE (representing 1L) lol. Rather than wait on paperwork to be faxed, signed and mailed back, they emailed me a package which I was able to digitally sign and email back to them. Smooth as silk and got my start in trucking with Swift.

Lots of post on here about new drivers' experiences in orientation and being with mentors to give you a feel for it. Once you solo out they expect you to hit the ground running, very little hand holding unless you really need it or screw up. I would say Swift is doing the industry a HUGE favor training and turning out thousands of quality drivers a year.
