Well yes if it is not in the exhaust mode, and who told you one kind of fitting is legal to leak and another isn't. You might need to think about that.
Per dot any audible leak is oos, they do not distinguish what or where as far as audible air leaks come from.
I have had dot officers let me slide with out fixing one on the spot, but that is up to the officer.
Most recently was the exhaust port on the quick release for the steer axle brakes.
Is this a dot violation/oos?

& Read that in the cvsa book 2018. I misread it a bit, but It’s kind of confusing, I’ll post it up. It’s like if it leaks at the fitting it’s nott oos, but at the hose into the fitting it is. I guess that would have to be proved on spot with a spray bottle and soap water lol,, to which part it’s actually leaking from.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Out of Service for fingernails too long lol

I do not have the regs in front of me at the time. Just a leak, seep is not oos, but somewhere in the regs it adresses, the term audible and any and all audible leaks are oos. If the dot officer can hear it, he can shut down on the spot.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I understand that to be OS if a line is cracked on the outside of the fitting. They used the example of a push to connect fitting that was leaking at the connection. The example did not differentiate between push to connect or compression fittings. That is just my take on the deal and I could agree with that.
My take on the deal does not matter if I get put out of service. If you can pull that stuff up on your devices, while they are checking to see if you are a registered serial killer or something it could help.
How about this: I was looking at a problem on a farm truck, not mine, with low power and cutting out.
I had a scanner on the dash and the pedal to the metal. No other vehicles were on my side of a 4 lane divided Hwy. Looking at the scanner and then down to the gauges. Got off the go pedal and rounded the curve. Blue light special and 12 over. OK fine but where is your DOT number? It is a farm truck it is exempt. Well you are being paid while you are driving this truck so you have to have your own DOT number. Must have looked at him like a cross eyed dog that does not understand with my head ####ed. Speechless! He said I know it sounds convoluted but technically you are generating income while driving this vehicle and are required to have you own DOT number.
How many dealerships have DOT numbers?
I still see some officers with the, to protect and serve attitude. I appreciate them.Rideandrepair, spsauerland, HopeOverMope and 1 other person Thank this. -
I had one state trooper on my fuel tank one day, you would think the milk truck is the slowest thing on the road.
He wanted to know how much is in the trailer. Keep in mind that depends on how the cows are doing last night. I told him oh round 5500 gallons or so. Enough for a Citys worth of school kids give or take.
NO NO NO NO. HOW MUCH WEIGHT.
Oh that.
Figures around 33000 of milk.
NO. NO... NO.. no raps pen on door...
How much all this weight?
Who knows Officer, I don't weight milk trucks these days. Now if you got 4 farm horses chained to
NO NOOO NOOOOOOO...
huh. must have something else to do ...Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I want one of those chin straps for my hardhat
Rideandrepair and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
Yes indeed. A violation is still a violation wether it be oos or not. Just trying to stay on top of my stuff without over buying on everything like I used to.
Being a one truck operation, csa scores are weighed more heavy and I’m just trying to stay ahead on it. Doesn’t help that much is left up to speculation, and some regs are left grey in both directions. Overall, it is what is, I try to always keep good brakes, in adjustment, no leaks, and all lights working. That covers most of it. Or does it??? Just trying to find that fine line between getting the most out of parts while staying compliant and safe.
Appreciate the words and time.Last edited: Jun 7, 2019
