I'm glad I got a tiny taste of what the old way was like. Running older equipment and paper logs
bzinger Thanks this. -
I'm doing pt @ a mom&pop construction outfit. Same ol'####. Nice to have a few extra $ but I'm not sure how long I'll gut it out. The fun is gone.

There are seasonal gigs, that don't require CDL's. Couple years back, I did a trailer loading and shuttle across the property( with a VERY tired Plainfield truck) for a cranberry marsh in N. Wis. It was like 6-7 weeks, and a bunch of goof offs, we had a blast. The only glitch was I had to tarp the trailers. Some had roll tarps, making it much easier, but I just couldn't drag those tarps. MY problem, is my current rent is based off my SS income, any extra income will affect my rent, and since nobody pays cash anymore, it just doesn't pay to work. Sound familiar?okiedokie Thanks this.

I must remember a different world trucking. When I first started trucking in the spring of 2000 I remember finding parking back then was just as much of a challenge as it is now running midwest, se and ne. I remember most states the entrance and exit ramps were always full of parked trucks at night time. Seems like nowadays with everyone having an EOBR nanny that the interstates are empty from about 8 or 9pm until about 5am. Used to it was busy then with lots of BS'ing on the CB. Now, nothing.
201, spsauerland and Savor the Flavor Thank this. -
Logbooks were not mandatory in Canada until '87 and I never had company push me for miles. Did my thing and parked where and when I wanted. I have likely only been asked for my logs a couple dozen times in 4 decades and only ONCE in the past 25 years!!

Difference then, rc, is those trucks were only parked for a short time. Or someone would see you "doing laps" and would shout on the radio, they were heading out. Sure is a different time.rollin coal and mtoo Thank this.

Can't say how many times I saw a truck "doing laps" and shout out to him that I was getting ready to pull out. On the other hand, it sure made me feel warm and fuzzy when someone saw me doing laps and gave me a shout out.201 and rollin coal Thank this.
