Can't say on '76, but '50 to '58 no need. You stopped at a nice little truck stop, went in peed, washed up, sat down to a home style cooked meal, with coffee/tea and pie. Belched and hit the road again. Up thru TN and VA; you meshed your pull offs to let the old truck breathe and the 8 cars behind you pass, with the need to pee. Walk around the tractor to the straddle saddle tank/drive wheel concealment and relieve. Back then there were numerous wide firm/gravel spaces to get off the road a decent distance.

I thought you gave up and quit the trucking business? As an outsider, does any of this affect you now?

    pumpkinishere Thanks this.

I’m maintaining my CDL. I leave open the possibility of buying my own truck. After 4 years of Houston LTL and having to do some crazy maneuvering on tight city streets I definitely feel my skills are far above average.

Don’t feel an outsider at all. Many on this site have never driven at all. You can consider me one if you want. Shoot me a PM if you’re ever in Houston. I’ll meet you at any truck stop and dazzle you with my skills:) assuming you’ll let me drive, Maybe if your lucky I’ll be door dashing and I’ll bring you some good food. Better than anything you’ll find at a Houston Truckstop. We can eat Cheesecake Factory takeout and laugh at the Swift trucks taking all day to do a simple straight back. And you’ll say ‘Dam Shack I can’t believe I thought you were an outsider you got mad skills’ and I’ll say you know what a couple cold beers would go well with this free takeout I scored, you’re on your 10 right ?

Not a thing in the 80s and 90s then I was driving .
If you just needed to pee and didn’t need fuel or anything , you pulled over at the top of a hill on the shoulder , stepped between the passenger side fuel tank and drives ,
Stopping at the top of a hill was to make it easier to get rolling again

and you’d see a nice shoulder at the top of a hill on the interstate every few miles. With no grass , because so many trucks pulled over .

No plastic bottles that I can remember back then.
If you did use a bottle it was a glass one and you wouldn’t get your nickel deposit back if you did pee in it!
