Go to Home Depot and get Plexiglass cut to size slide over sticky or stiff placards fast and easy.

I have never ever lost one in all the hazmat I've hauled...here's what I do...if you have the non stick type get a can of adhesive spray at Walmart or elsewheres(I buy LockTite brand but any brand is okay), I buy the medium duty, cost like 8 bucks a can, my company reimburses me for it, you clean off the surface dirt of the trailer with like water/Dawn mixture in a spray bottle, or 409, or use Windex, spray a light coating of the adhesive spray on the placard, if you want spray a light coating on the trailer also, I give the trailer a fast spray. Let it dry on the placard for like 30 seconds, apply to trailer, the placard stays on in ice, snow, beating rain, hail, etc. For removal I've never had any real problems either I buy them small razor scrapers from Dollar Tree, like 5 to a pack, cheap works good, final results DOT likes it, I'm happy their happy, all is good. Now for the self sticking type, just clean the surface and apply, rub down with a towel or rag once or twice. Again I've never lost a placard, however I witnessed many a driver getting fined by DOT at the scales for a missing placard or two. I won't and don't use those placard holders, but if your are sold on them unreliable holders, use clear shipping tape, and check them frequently especially before a open scale. The key to placards staying in place is a clean surface, DON'T use duct tape, DOT does not like duct tape, they want transparency.

    I assume you've done this?

Sounds worth a try, but how thick?

Good call, Tim. Unfortunately, the best I could do was work at the edges and chip off little nubs of it with a screwdriver, until the trooper got tired of watching me and told me to go.

One option could be to connect a die grinder with a wirebrush to your emergency line and have at it.

    3/32"

But if you buy it make sure you store them in a way they don't rub together or they will become too cloudy to use.

With placards in placard holders I use clear packing tape horizontally across the top cross bar and another piece across the lower cross bar.

If they put paper placards on my trailer when its raining I take a picture with my phone of all 4 sides as the paper placards tend to go limp and blow out or dissolve. Our trailers have 4 placard holders on each side.

I think mine are 1/8th" thick and are cut just a hair larger than the sticky placards. They fit snug in the holders. I've been using the same set for over a year.

My company gave us some and they are really thin, maybe 1/32". Even then somtimes it doesn't go in the holder easy sometimes. Some of the holders get pushed in by drivers trying to keep their placards in. My problem is remembering to take them off when I drop the trailer at the yard. Before we had these I'd put small rocks under the cross bars of the placard holder to hold the placard in place.
