I plan to just keep mine in the box I got it in, inside a plastic container. Will put it in one of the side compartments.

Both because I know that plastic containers dry out over time and become brittle. the cardboard will help cushion the lock against hitting and breaking the plastic from bumps or just regular usage. Plus the cardboard may help keep it cleaner by absorbing grease and moisture on it. Once the box gets too dirty, I'll just grab some new cardboard from a grocery store when they are stocking shelves and use it to line the container.

This is right on the money. Double wrap that kingpin in Walmart shopping bags and lock it in place, bags and all. Just be careful as you place it or remove it you aren't getting your head or arms up against the plate. Wrap the bags to put the grease inside after removing the lock and throw the bags away.

I stow my lock in its original box. After three years and a few dozen uses it is still in pristine condition.

Another advantage of using the bags over the lock is that it is very visible for anyone even thinking of trying to hook up to your trailer, more than if you simply put the lock on by itself.

No. If I would have read this thread sooner, my new lock would still be clean.

Actually - I use 'Kevin' and a small folding lawn chair. I open the lawn chair under the trailer, 'Kevin' sits in it ( he's in the shade ), and everyone just simply avoids my trailer. Works great. I just keep 'Kevin' and the lawn chair stowed under the bunk when not in use and it's clean. 'Kevin' doesn't eat, drink, sleep, urinate, or defecate.
