I've never charged anyone, other than giving them a gentle lecture on how they really should've been more prepared.

That said, I did have a tanker driver insist on giving me $20 for showing him how to do it. I thought that was a nice gesture, even though I told him it wasn't necessary.

Generally, broken cross links are indicative of installing the chain when it contains a twisted cross link or two. Lay them out and make sure that all the connectors are laying flat and the "dogs" (the sharp ends of the connecting unit of cross link to rail) are facing the same direction, both sides and the entire length. Have fun untwisting 3 railers!
And this is just another part of "pre-tripping" your equipment.....BEFORE YOU LEAVE A SAFE COMFORTABLE LOCATION, NOT AT THE CHAIN UP POINT!

    Great advice thread BTW!

They are gangs people work on in Georgia. Hence, the saying working on the chain gang . Now it seems they have moved to the great northwest.

One other related word of advice. Stop and check your tires for embedded, broken cross-links. An industrious soul could make a small fortune from scrap value alone for all the broken chains laying embedded in the snow in the travel lane from poorly installed chains. One cross link in a tire and hopefully you have a tire repair kit or can limp to service.
