I understand a little bit. A lot of the time whatever money you make isn't worth the sacrifice. It's a constant headache for not a lot of money when you weigh out that it's a 24 hour a day job. As a company man, you're at the mercy of dispatchers and load planners. And those are the people you're dependent on to make your income...along with how the freight dice roll.
I love my friends and family and miss them when I'm out. There's many a day when things aren't going right, I ask myself.....Self...is this worth the sacrifice and aggravation?
Sometimes it's worth less money for more of a "normal/traditional" life.
It's a question I think many of us ask ourselves.

The last line - go to Old Dominion and apply for P&D or linehaul, you'd be home every week (or night with P&D), and make double what you're doing now. I don't blame ya - 2 weeks out is my absolute limit.

That street sweeper job will the most boring job you have ever had .... You sit and drive 5 mph for 8 hrs a day , the most exciting time of this job is when you drive to and from your work zone to the yard and at $13.50 an hr?
You won't be going anywhere fast that's for sure

Sitting for three days? Psh, that is why you have a little bit of savings to tide you over.

Or even better ask the dispatcher to scare up a few local loads while you are waiting those three days. I once was threatened (Not by malice, just a business problem all around that week) with myself and 20 trucks sitting in Ontario CA east of LA for 5 days due to no loads... unless we were willing to bobtail north as a convoy and start moving loaded trailers south out of Yakima that season. They were prepared to throw a nice sack of money at us for our trouble.

Trucking is not something you can go home to wife every night and still get to do it well.

That street sweeper job is going to BORE you to tears and you will realize at some point your precious 13.50 an hour can be 135 dollars an hour but you wont like it anymore due to it's sheer boredom. And threat of people making claims against you with you possibly throwing stones, objects etc at them with your sweepers. Oh by the way, any sweeper worth working ran at night in empty parking lots.

My savings have been depleted because of all the sitting. I can only sit in cali for so long or run 400mi Cali runs, before I out expense the enevitable 400$ paychecks. Last time I did local work I spent 14 hours doing things and limped down the road till I could park on a curb for total of 75$.
I honestly understand the meaning of that grass is greener line.
