LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP

If you have ANYTHING in your background, like bankruptcy, unpaid child-support, erratic job history, crimes, traffic tickets, drug use, accidents, etc., don't go to CDL school until you find a good employer to work for. For decades this forum has seemed to attract 2 sorts of questions more than others.

    1. I have (no job history, multiple speeding tickets, DUIs, am convicted felon, etc) and I get out of CDL school in 30 minutes and have zero money. Where should I work?

    2. I just signed a lifetime contract with ABC Trucking and am leaving for orientation in 30 minutes and was wondering if they are a good place to work?

If you have "dings" on your motor vehicle record, criminal history, very specific conditions for working you have to do a lot of research, NOT JUST AN INTERNET SEARCH, if you hope to find a trucking company that CAN or will hire you. Being desperate does NOT equal having a job waiting for you. Use this forum to learn about the different types of trucking jobs and the difference in quality between trucking companies. Then when you have a small list of companies you think you want to work for, make them put you in contact with current working drivers at that company. Ask those drivers about the pay, schedule, working conditions, company atmosphere, quality of equipment, etc.

If you do nothing but an internet search and sign a contract with a company, why ask if they are any good. You may already be obligated. Maybe you can get out of that contract, maybe you can't. Typically any trucking company or school giving your a "free" CDL is going to require 12 months of continuous work after CDL school/training or you will owe them the cost of your "free" school.

Look before you leap. Nobody should jump off a skyscraper and only after they start to fall start Googling skydiving. Many threads on TTR are sometimes like that.

    It’s funny, but totally true.

This logic should also apply to every aspiring owner operator who has no experience and no CDL but just took out a second mortgage for a down payment on a 2012 Cascadia with 700k miles with a check engine light and DEF light on.... they are on their way to pick it up and want to know if they got a good deal.

Agreed - should be a sticky.

I'm amazed at the amount of people that get CDL's and then are informed that two or three 'over 15' tickets make them almost ineligible for employment.
